Fox News says UN is the LINK between Saddam and Al Queda.
Edited on Sun Oct-23-05 05:54 AM by dutchdemocrat
Talk about grabbing at straws. The biggest link between murderous armed mujahideen terrorist lunatics like Al Qaeda and sociopathic dictators like Saddam Hussein was the guy who picked up the tab for both of them in the 1980s. Ronald Reagan.

Exclusive pic of Al Qaeda go-between shaking hands on the deal:

So a company had links to Saddam, and also had links to someone who has links to someone who may have financed Al Qaeda, and this is supposed to be a connection?

U.N. Procurement Scandal: Ties to Saddam and Al Qaeda

NEW YORK — The scandal engulfing the United Nations Procurement Department (search) now appears to be bottomless. It also shows signs of growing more sinister, especially where it involves a mysterious private company called IHC Services (search), which did big business with the procurement department until it was removed from U.N. rosters in June.

New details of how dark the scandal could prove to be have emerged from the private sale of IHC on June 3, 2005, just as the procurement scandal was about to break. It now appears that while doing business with the U.N., IHC had links both to Saddam Hussein’s old sanctions-busting networks, and to a Liechtenstein-based businessman, Engelbert Schreiber, Jr., known among other things for his ties to a figure designated by the U.N. itself as a financier of Al Qaeda.

Registered in New York State, with offices in New York City and Milan, IHC has been involved in possibly hundreds of millions of dollars' worth of business with the U.N. since the mid-1990s, serving both as a direct supplier and as a go-between for a wide variety of other contractors. This work has included IHC’s signing or helping to broker contracts for supplies ranging from portable generators to rations for U.N. peacekeeping troops in such trouble spots as West Africa and the Middle East.

IHC came under public scrutiny this summer, after FOX News broke the story on June 20 that IHC had maintained especially close ties with Alexander Yakovlev (search), a Russian official in the U.N. procurement department, who while handling an IHC contract with the U.N. had obtained a job for his son with the company, and had also been channeling funds to a secret offshore bank account.

4. Has anyone pointed out the fact that this picture was

taken AFTER the event that Saddam is now being tried for ? If I am not mistaken this picture was taken in 1983 and the gassing in question was in 1982.

Google says this photo taken Dec. 20, 1983.

6. Gassing in 1982
Saddam Hussein in court, speaking to judge. (AP /APTN)

Fast Fact

Saddam and seven senior members of his regime are facing charges that they ordered the killing in 1982 of nearly 150 people in the mainly Shiite village of Dujail north of Baghdad after a failed attempt on the former dictator's life.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

(CBS/AP) Saddam Hussein went on trial Wednesday for alleged crimes against fellow Iraqis, appearing in a tightly secured courtroom in the former headquarters of his Baath Party two years after his capture. He faces charges in a 1982 massacre of nearly 150 Shiites that could carry the death penalty if he is convicted

8. Thanks - I looked for a link and in my search, found this...
http://www.patridiots.com/001094.html

>snipped> e-mail from Ray Dubuque of "Liberals Like Christ." It's a real interesting quote from Rush Limbaugh in 1988.

"And now the liberals want to stop President Reagan from selling chemical warfare agents and military equipment to Saddam Hussein, and why? Because Saddam 'allegedly' gassed a few Kurds in his own country. Mark my words. All of this talk of Saddam Hussein being a 'war criminal' or 'committing crimes against humanity' is the same old thing. LIBERAL HATE SPEECH! And speaking of poison gas . . . I SAY WE ROUND UP ALL THE DRUG ADDICTS AND GAS THEM." Rush (oxycontin) Limbaugh, Nov. 3, 1988

-----------------------------------------
Not that we need any more reason to doubt Rush's reason but here ya go!

12. Unfortunately, the source site says it's not an actual Rush quote.
Would that it were.

http://www.LiberalsLikeChrist.Org/about/Limbaugh.htm

Here's a Limbaugh quote was too good to be true.  It sounds like something Rush might have said, but after telling many of my friends about it, I have since learned that it comes from a Boondocks comic strip, where the words were put in Rush's mouth.

20. That's the difference between us and Limbaugh:
We're honest. I wish it had been a Rush quote, but when I saw it wasn't, I pointed it out. You immediately acknowledged the error.

Think he would have done the same?

17. 2 different events
the charge Saddam is currently facing is the reprisal in Dujai (after an unsuccessful assassination attempt):

A total 143 of the town's inhabitants were killed in the attack or executed later, a number of these were boys 13 years of age <1>.1,500 people were also incarcerated and tortured, while other residents, many of them women and children, were sent to desert camps. Saddam's regime destroyed the town and then rebuilt it shortly after. In addition to these punishments, 1,000 square kilometres (250,000 acres) of farmland was destroyed; replanting was only permitted 10 years later.

The gassing of the Kurds in Halabja was in March 1988

10. OH MY GOD -- now why didn't I think of that?
I swear, these people sould really be writing for The Onion. I almost wish I could get Fox News to watch it in that light; I'll bet I would have wet 'em if I'd heard it said with a straight face by a talking Foxhead.

The UN's the link! Brilliant! Now THAT's comedy.

14. And in '87, the US was hyping up the mujahideen as being the uber-goodguys
"The Living Daylights" being a prime example of this.

Great movie, but after a while it becomes impossible to watch because it's so atrociously dated and obviously 2 dimensional in its political slant.
