This post tries to make it easier to understand why some of us Ohioans respect Sherrod Brown. It doesn’t address "the who is the better candidate" issue, but only tries to present an overview of Brown’s positions, votes and actions. As to Brown’s relationship to the alphabet soup of the Democratic Party’s leadership, I point out only that because he was in the leadership of the fight against the Clinton administrations trade policies(NAFTA) and sanctions against Iraq, he is less than a favorite. As to his insider status with the DNC and the DSCC, please examine his record and decide if he seems like a pawn for yourselves. Some my links presented here may be helpful, or use your favorite search engine (search for Sherrod Brown Iraq, Sherrod Brown drugs, Sherrod Brown Wal-mart etc.).
Brown is a member of the Progressive Caucus, The Out of Iraq Caucus and a signer of John Conyers letter to The white House after the release of the DSM. His voting record appears here:

"...I went and lived at the CIA for about four days to make sure that nothing was," he began, when he paused and glared at a staffer seated behind the members of Congress. "Are you shaking your head for something, young man, back there?" Powell asked. "Are you part of these proceedings? ... Rep. Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio), a 12-year veteran of the House, objected, "Mr. Chairman, I've never heard a witness reprimand a staff person in the middle of a question." Powell shot back, "I seldom come to a meeting where I am talking to a congressman and I have people aligned behind you giving editorial comment by head shakes." "Well, I think people have opinions," Brown responded.”

Illinois Democrat Jan Schakowsky and I organized the effort. We served as megaphones for hundreds of thousands, perhaps millions, of Americans who wanted to know more about the deception and corruption swirling about the ongoing war in Iraq. More than twelve Democrats have written to Speaker of the House of Representatives, J. Dennis Hastert, urging him to allow a fresh discussion before the President decides to go to war. In recent days, Congressmen have taken to the floor of the House to question the wisdom of Mr Bush’s obsession with war against Iraq. Mr Brown warned that a pre-emptive strike against Iraq would send a wrong message around the world.

* Representative Sherrod Brown, a Ohio Democrat who opposed the October resolution, has been joined by two representatives who supported the resolution, Joseph Hoeffel, Democrat from Pennsylvania, and Ellen Tauscher, a Democrat from California, in sponsoring the "Presidential Report on Iraq Resolution of 2003." The legislation would require President Bush to make a public report to Congress on the possible consequences of war with Iraq prior to ordering US forces into such a war. In addition to forcing the President to detail the human, economic, environmental and political costs of a war, the act would require him to submit "a determination that further diplomatic or other peaceful means will not adequately protect the national security of the United States against the threat posed by Iraq."

Urgent Labor Antiwar Action Alert
US Labor Against War
As we write this message, less than 12 hours remain... In submitting this resolution, Rep. Brown said, "In the absence of a clear, imminent threat to the United States, the President has a responsibility to present to the American public a full assessment of the possible costs and consequences of taking military action against Iraq. . . . Before we start a war that could cost the lives of hundreds of thousands of civilians, the administration owes the American public a clear-eyed assessment of this war. It would be irresponsible to rush into this conflict without fully acknowledging the potential costs and consequences."

From the Senate Floor, March 20, 2003
... I introduce a Senate companion to a joint resolution already introduced in the House by Congressman SHERROD BROWN of Ohio. This resolution is quite simple. It requires the President to report to Congress on the potential costs and consequences of military action in Iraq before ordering the United States Armed Forces to war in Iraq. This is a resolution that simply requires that this country know what it is we are getting into before, not after, war breaks out.

On September 12, 2002, President Bush went to the United Nations calling on that organization to take action to enforce its resolutions and protect international interests in peace and security. We support that call and believe the United Nations must be given a chance to carry out this mission. Therefore, for this reason and those iterated above, we respectfully oppose this resolution authorizing the unilateral use of force and submit our dissenting views.

But when Brown contrasted Powell's military experience to Bush's record with the National Guard, saying the president "may have been AWOL" from duty, Powell exploded. "First of all, Mr. Brown, I won't dignify your comments about the president because you don't know what you are talking about," Powell snapped.
"I'm sorry I don't know what you mean, Mr. Secretary," Brown replied.
"You made reference to the president," Powell shot back.
Brown then repeated his understanding that Bush may have been AWOL from guard duty.
"Mr. Brown, let's not go there," Powell retorted. "Let's not go there in this hearing. If you want to have a political fight on this matter, that is very controversial, and I think it is being dealt with by the White House, fine, but let's not go there."

Thank you for expressing your concerns about the Bush administration's claims of weapons of mass destruction (WMD) in Iraq, and the United States' inability to locate them.
