Einstein on Race and Racism
Fred Jerome & Rodger Taylor

Journalist Fred Jerome and author Rodger Taylor, in their book “Einstein on Race and Racism,” bring together a compilation of documents, interviews, and narrative that show the scientist’s efforts toward ending racism both in the United States and the world. The book uses Einstein’s letters and personal exchanges with such figures as W.E. B. Du Bois and Paul Robeson as evidence for his commitment to racial equality and the anti-lynching campaign. “Einstein on Race and Racism” includes interviews with African-American members of the community in New Jersey where Albert Einstein lived.

Fred Jerome is the author of "The Einstein File: J. Edgar Hoover's Secret War Against the World's Most Famous Scientist." He has written articles for Newsweek and the New York Times among other publications. Rodger Taylor has been a part of the National Steering Committee on the African Burial Ground Project. Enlightened Democracy: The Case for the Electoral College
Tara Ross

Tara Ross makes the case that the American electoral college protects our established republic and isn't an outdated and ineffective system as its critics have said. From the annual Freedom Fest convention in Las Vegas, Ms. Ross talks about her book, "Enlightened Democracy: The Case for the Electoral College." In it, the author makes the case for why the electoral college is a critical element of the American voting process and how without it, our country's election process would be altered dramatically.

Tara Ross has contributed articles to the Washington Times, USA Today, and National Law Journal. She's currently a lawyer and a columnist for American Enterprise Online.

Iraq Confidential: The Untold Story of the Intelligence Conspiracy to Undermine the UN and Overthrow Saddam Hussein
Scott Ritter and Seymour Hersh

Description: Scott Ritter talks about his new book, "Iraq Confidential," in which he argues that the Clinton administration, working through the CIA, thwarted the efforts of UN weapons inspectors in Iraq during the 1990s. Mr. Ritter, an inspector between 1991 and 1998, argues that President Clinton's real interest in Iraq was not the elimination of weapons of mass destruction but rather regime change. Mr. Ritter discusses these and more recent developments in Iraq with New Yorker reporter Seymour Hersh, author of "Chain of Command: The Road from 9/11 to Abu Ghraib." Both men answered audience questions following their discussion.

5. When Affirmative Action Was White: An Untold History ...
History on Book TV

On Saturday, October 22 at 11:30 am
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

When Affirmative Action Was White: An Untold History of Racial Inequality in Twentieth-Century America - History Panel
Ira Katznelson

Modern racial inequality in America grew from government policies enacted during the 1930s and 1940s intended to impede the socioeconomic progression of African-Americans. So writes author and Columbia University political science professor Ira Katznelson in his new book, "When Affirmative Action Was White: An Untold History of Racial Inequality in Twentieth-Century America." The book was the subject of a panel discussion featuring University of Pennsylvania professor Thomas Sugrue, author of "W.E.B. DuBois, Race, and the City: The Philadelphia Negro and Its Legacy"; Columbia University professor Manning Marable, author of "The Great Wells of Democracy: The Meaning of Race in American Life"; and Columbia University professor Sudhir Venkatesh, author of "American Project: The Rise and Fall of a Modern Ghetto." The panelists discuss how veterans benefits and New Deal programs benefitted whites more than African-Americans. Mr. Katznelson writes that the disparity which began during this era is a justification for the Affirmative Action policies of the modern era. Columbia University professor Marcellus Blount moderates the discussion.

Ira Katznelson is the author of several books including "City Trenches" and "Desolation and Enlightenment." He is a political science and history professor at Columbia University.

The Great Theft: Wrestling Islam from the Extremists
Khaled Abou El Fadl

Khaled Abou El Fadl argues that it is possible to interpret the Quran, or any other major religious text, in many different ways, and that problem is with the interpreters and not the religion. He says that Islamic fundamentalists cannot possibly know what Muhammad's views on contemporary issues would be and that it is possible for an Islamic state to be democratic. Following his remarks, Prof. Abou El Fadl takes questions from the audience.

Khaled Abou El Fadl is a professor of law at UCLA, where he teaches classes on Islamic law. He is the author of "Conference of the Books: The Search for Beauty in Islam," "Speaking in God's Name: Islamic Law, Authority and Women," and "And God Knows the Soldiers: The Authoritative and Authoritarian in Islamic Discourse."

Abigail Thernstrom

12. The Tragedy of Today's Gays
Sunday 12AM

Larry Kramer, The Tragedy of Today's Gays

Book Description
With equal parts eloquence and urgency, common sense and patriotism, Kramer writes a concise history of AIDS and despairs that gays have become a tragic people: A lack of civic and political involvement even when faced with an increasingly powerful and hateful opposition. A sexual abandon so reckless that "we are murdering each other." A growing addiction to crystal-meth that defies logic. But Kramer offers gays a survival plan: "So many of Larry Kramer's messages to the younger generation are humanist messages, so old-fashioned in a callow age that we need Kramer to make them again," writes Naomi Wolf in her foreword. "Honor your dead. Take responsibility for yourselves. Grow up. Your lives have meaning-don't fuck and drug them away."

35. Notes...
Last 10 years have seen a surge of interest in the founding fathers.

He was asked once “Why do we have to choose between Gore and Bush, and 200 years ago they got to choose between Jefferson and Adams? He quoted Adams – “if you look at the history of the American presidency, you have to believe that Darwin got it exactly backwards.”

Washington didn’t have wooden teeth, had several different pairs of dentures (Ivory usually)
French doctor specializing in ‘implants.’ teeth were taken from slaves.
When elected President, Washington had slave teeth in his mouth.

There was a conspiracy afoot to make Washington King or Emperor – he gets wind and he refuses the crown. He says he is not George the III, he is George Washington.

Q&A

Was Washington Religious?
He was a mason, but only lukewarm

religion and politics –
there’s no doubt that some presumption of Christianity is at the basis of US founding government., but when Hamilton was asked “Why there is no mention of God in the constitution?” He answered, “the subject of God never came up.”

Basic rule was… There cannot and must not be any form of national religion

Washington’s first term is focused on the issue of Indian displacement, keeping promises made to the Indians, giving them land and proper respect.

He once said Indians are the best fighters, and if he was in their place, he would be fighting us too.

Mrs. Loring in New York distracts Howe from pursuing Washington during the winter of 1777…
You don’t fight wars in the winter, and he wanted to spend the winter with her
“we should erect a monument to Mrs. Loring” She may have saved us from defeat.”

from - http://www.u-s-history.com/pages/h667.html
Howe's conduct in Philadelphia has been the subject of considerable scrutiny. He had brought his mistress from Boston, Mrs. Elizabeth Loring, the attractive wife of Loyalist Joshua Loring Jr., a commissary of prisoners. Mr. Loring seemed comfortable with the arrangement as long as he kept his lucrative appointment. Howe was roundly criticized for continuing of enjoy the pleasures of Philadelphia rather than press on with the hostilities.
Howe was not an incompetent military leader. He did, however, cling longer than others to an outmoded conception of warfare, preferring the older European approach. War in his view was an enterprise conducted by gentlemen who should not be expected to bestir themselves during inclement weather.
Howe's decision to move on Philadelphia rather than join General Burgoyne in 1777 may have been the decisive decision of the war. He was removed from his command in 1778 in favor of Sir Henry Clinton.

Washington, Lincoln and FDR are considered the greatest presidents according to historians.

Iraq Confidential: The Untold Story of the Intelligence Conspiracy to Undermine the UN and Overthrow Saddam Hussein
Scott Ritter and Seymour Hersh

Scott Ritter talks about his new book, "Iraq Confidential," in which he argues that the Clinton administration, working through the CIA, thwarted the efforts of UN weapons inspectors in Iraq during the 1990s.

Scott Ritter, former chief UN weapons inspector in Iraq, is the author of "Endgame: Solving the Iraq Crisis," "Frontier Justice: Weapons of Mass Destruction and the Bushwhacking of America," and, with William Rivers Pitt, of "War on Iraq: What Team Bush Doesn't Want You to Know." Seymour Hersh, who won the Pulitzer Prize for International Reporting in 1970 for his coverage of the My Lai Massacre, is the author of "The Price of Power: Kissinger in the Nixon White House" and "The Dark Side of Camelot."

43. Maybe I'm naive but
I really enjoyed Ritter and Hersh, talking with something like candor, about this war.

Did anyone else catch it?

It Takes a Parent: How the Culture of Pushover Parenting is Hurting Our Kids
Betsy Hart

Betsy Hart argues that today's "parenting culture" is harmful to children. In her book, "It Takes a Parent," she explains that by listening to the advice of family experts, parents have stopped disciplining unacceptable behavior and have passed the responsibility of decision-making off to their children. Ms. Hart, a single mother of four children, asserts that this type of parenting encourages children to be selfish and prohibits them from growing into healthy adults. This event was hosted by the Clare Boothe Luce Policy Institute and took place in Washington, DC.

Betsy Hart is the nationally syndicated columnist of "From the Hart," which is distributed by the Scripps Howard News Service. "It Takes a Parent" is her first book.

1491: New Revelations of the Americas Before Columbus
Charles Mann

In the year before Christopher Columbus landed in 1492, there were more people in the Americas than in Europe. This is the conclusion reached by Charles Mann in his new book, "1491: New Revelations of the Americas Before Columbus." In it, the author describes the cultures of the Aztec and Native American peoples of the Americas as well as the technological innovations of their respective cultures. He refutes the commonly taught version of the Americas before Columbus, saying it wasn't a sparsely populated wilderness but a cultivated land populated by advanced peoples.

Charles Mann is a correspondent for Science, Wired, and the Atlantic Monthly. He is the co-author of "The Aspirin Wars" and "Noah's Choice: The Future of Endangered Species" among others.

Video link - http://www.booktv.org/ram/history/0805/btv082005_1.ram

Rabbi David Dalin argues that Pope Pius XII was not complicit with Adolf Hitler and the Nazi party, as some historians contend. In his new book, "The Myth of Hitler's Pope: How Pope Pius XII Rescued Jews from the Nazis," Rabbi Dalin examines the actions of Pope Pius XII and also traces the actions of the Catholic Church during the late 1930s and through World War II. The author writes that Pope Pius XII was not an anti-Semite and that the Catholic Church did more than any other religion to save the lives of European Jews during the Holocaust.

Rabbi David Dalin is the author or co-author of numerous books, including "Religion and State in the American Jewish Experience." He is a professor of history and political science at Ave Maria University in Naples, Florida.

The Other War: Israelis, Palestinians and the Struggle for Media Supremacy
Stephanie Gutmann

In "The Other War: Israelis, Palestinians and the Struggle for Media Supremacy," author Stephanie Gutmann writes that the events in the Middle East are often manipulated and misrepresented by western media outlets. The author also makes the argument that in this media war, she believes Israel has been consistently beaten by what she deems to be the more press-savvy Palestinians. For her research, Ms. Gutmann traveled extensively throughout the region interviewing Israeli government officials and experiencing the media battle being waged first hand.

Stephanie Gutmann has written for the New York Times and New York Post. She is also the author of "The Kinder, Gentler Military."

36. Kick! Coming up - Justice Stephen Breyer
Justice Stephen Breyer, Active Liberty: Interpreting Our Democratic Constitution

Born: August 15, 1938
Party: Democrat
Time served: 11 years, 2 months, 20 days
Position: associate Justice
Nominated by: Clinton
Commissioned: August 2, 1994
Sworn in: August 3, 1994

Biography

President Clinton's second nomination to the Supreme Court is a man of difficult descriptions. Contradictory in many ways, Stephen Gerald Breyer defied simple classification, as a man and as a judge. The first son of a middle-class San Francisco Jewish family, Breyer eventually married into a well-established family of the British aristocracy. Though he possessed enormous wealth, he nonetheless lived a relatively simple life, riding the bus to work and mowing his own lawn. His peculiarities did not end with his personal life, but extended to his bench practice as well. As an appeals court judge, Breyer upheld parental notification for teenage abortions and rejected federal guidelines that prevented health officials at public clinics from advising abortion. A strong proponent of cutting government regulation, Breyer often justified his position, not as beneficial for business, but as being in the interest of the people. This sentimentalism could be viewed cynically. But in Breyer's case, however, these sentiments are genuine and reflect a pragmatic view with many mismatched results.
