74. Pat--grab your computer and haul it over to the repuke place
You can still reach us and have reinforcements from them if you need to! I know that probably sounds horrendous but it might be more settling then having to ride out the storm alone after the power goes out.

122. Please be safe, join with a group of people- there is strength
in numbers.

Please keep us posted so we won't worry about you so much.

It's cold here in the mid west, over cast, 48 degrees, no rain, though.

I've always found this an up lifing speech. Hope it's enjoyable for you too.
..........
St. Crispen's Day Speech
William Shakespeare, 1599
Enter the KING
WESTMORELAND. O that we now had here
But one ten thousand of those men in England
That do no work to-day!

KING. What's he that wishes so?
My cousin Westmoreland? No, my fair cousin;
If we are mark'd to die, we are enow
To do our country loss; and if to live,
The fewer men, the greater share of honour.
God's will! I pray thee, wish not one man more.
By Jove, I am not covetous for gold,
Nor care I who doth feed upon my cost;
It yearns me not if men my garments wear;
Such outward things dwell not in my desires.
But if it be a sin to covet honour,
I am the most offending soul alive.
No, faith, my coz, wish not a man from England.
God's peace! I would not lose so great an honour
As one man more methinks would share from me
For the best hope I have. O, do not wish one more!
Rather proclaim it, Westmoreland, through my host,
That he which hath no stomach to this fight,
Let him depart; his passport shall be made,
And crowns for convoy put into his purse;
We would not die in that man's company
That fears his fellowship to die with us.
This day is call'd the feast of Crispian.
He that outlives this day, and comes safe home,
Will stand a tip-toe when this day is nam'd,
And rouse him at the name of Crispian.
He that shall live this day, and see old age,
Will yearly on the vigil feast his neighbours,
And say 'To-morrow is Saint Crispian.'
Then will he strip his sleeve and show his scars,
And say 'These wounds I had on Crispian's day.'
Old men forget; yet all shall be forgot,
But he'll remember, with advantages,
What feats he did that day. Then shall our names,
Familiar in his mouth as household words-
Harry the King, Bedford and Exeter,
Warwick and Talbot, Salisbury and Gloucester-
Be in their flowing cups freshly rememb'red.
This story shall the good man teach his son;
And Crispin Crispian shall ne'er go by,
From this day to the ending of the world,
But we in it shall be remembered-
We few, we happy few, we band of brothers;
For he to-day that sheds his blood with me
Shall be my brother; be he ne'er so vile,
This day shall gentle his condition;
And gentlemen in England now-a-bed
Shall think themselves accurs'd they were not here,
And hold their manhoods cheap whiles any speaks
That fought with us upon Saint Crispin's day.

It may be of help to you, plus others from the states who spend a lot of time there are also posting and watching that message board closely. Everyone there is intimately familiar with your area.

Thanks, u guys..thank u so much! There is no way i could share my fear with my close family or friends..too scary..way too scary! I am really not that scared..scared, but really believe i will be OK...i was just feeling so alone in this..which in many ways i am...geeez, just imagine being on a little island about to be smooshed by a giant hurricane...and the only other english speaking people on the island were other americans, who just happened to be.......the most obnoxious repugs...plus critical and negative human beings u ever met....but these horrid people have the only two story place in the neighborhood where u live..and they have thrown you a life raft....ahhhhhhhhhhhhh...what to do? haahhahahahah! i will grab it of course, but ya know.....every time i am around this man (his wife is not too bad), for even 5 mins...i start to hold tight to my hand...because i know it wants to slap him and slap him and slap him. Ah well..survival of the fittest...and i am the most fit of the fittest...and you all are right..i will survive.

I've been to Isle Mujares. On the north end of the island is a very sturdy cinder block hotel. It was built to withstand hurricanes. It only has the walls built. They ran out of money before they could finish it. No plumbing, no windows, no electricity but you could survive a storm surge there. Take care!

You have a lot of people here with you, and you know you can find an expert somewhere around here for anything you might like to talk about. And if no one is feeling communicative, we'll happily kick this sucker until it's all squishy. :grouphug: (For the record, my specialty is smarmy, smartass one-liners.)

If I can survive riding out Katrina with an addict and a senile grandmother, then you will do fine with the Republicans. :)
However, trust me that you do not want to ride out a major hurricane alone. Just bring a book or something to keep busy along with your supplies. If all else fails: drink.

Best of luck to you!!!

If the repukes have a two story --grab whatever booze you can find and head over there.

You don't want to deal with this alone.

69. Having been through a major hurricane
for me it wasn't as frightening going through it as it was going out afterwards to a rearranged world. So brace yourself for seeing destruction and familiar things gone. But it was also a very primal experience of realizing the forces of nature, the incredible power. Living on an island you might have a better feel for that already, but for me it was life-altering. After recovering from the shock, I knew I would never lose my place in the universe ever again--ie. we are each very small and vulnerable. And we need to help each other, and try not to hurt each other. That seems elementary, but I was hit by the raw truth of it in an instant after that hurricane. It was an awakening. Glad you have some neighbors to be with mexicopat-- maybe you can throw ideologies to the wind for a short time and just ride it out together. Check in here when you can. As others have said, we'll keep the lifeline out to you til we hear that it's over and you're OK. :grouphug:

75. I can relate, mg
Living through the storm (Katrina) was worrisome and angsty, but I didn't realize how lucky I was until after. Seeing the damage after was numbing.

During the storm I looked for things that might make a raft or a floatation device. I gave a drill sargent whistle to my son and put one on myself. We discussed knocking holes in the roof and grabbing trees. We had an inflatable mattress designated for floating. Luckily, we didn't needed it.

I too, had an awakening. Like I snapped out of a fog that I was living in. I appreciate life more.

The main thing it survival. Have a plan.

126. Poems & Quotes for you to read:
Poems & Quotes

Authors cited

"The tree which moves some to tears of joy
is in the eyes of others only a green thing
that stands in the way.
Some see nature all ridicule and deformity ...
and some scarce see nature at all.
But to the eyes of the man of imagination,
nature is imagination itself."

William Blake (1757-1827)
British Poet

"If you will think of ourselves as coming out of the earth,
rather than having been thrown in here from somewhere else,
you see that we are the earth,
we are the consciousness of the earth.
These are the eyes of the Earth.
And this is the voice of the earth."

Joseph Campbell

"Most people are on the world, not in it--
have no conscious sympathy or relationship
to anything about them--
undiffused, separate, and rigidly alone
like marbles of polished stone,
touching, but separate."

John Muir

The People's Treasure

"They're privatising things we own together.
They're flogging off the people's common ground.

And though we're still connected by the weather
They say that sharing things is now unsound.

They're lonelifying all the public spaces.
They're rationalising swags and billabongs.

They're awfulising nature's lovely places,
Dismantling the dreaming and the songs.

Their macho fear of flabby soft sensations
Makes them pine for all things hard and lean.

They talk of foreign market penetrations
And throbbing private sectors. It's obscene.

They're basically unloving types of creatures
With demons lurking underneath their beds.

You'll notice that a necktie always features
To keep their hearts quite separate from their heads.

So if they steal away the people's treasure.
And bring the jolly swagman to his knees.

They can't remove the simple common pleasure
Of loathing public bastards such as these."

Michael Leunig,
Australian Poet

"Every walk to the woods is a religious rite,
every bath in the stream is a saving ordinance.
Communion service is at all hours,
and the bread and wine are from
the heart and marrow of Mother Earth.

To find the universal elements enough;
to find the air and the water exhilarating;
to be refreshed by a morning walk or an evening saunter...
to be thrilled by the stars at night;
to be elated over a bird’s nest or a wildflower in spring—
these are some of the rewards of the simple life.

The most precious things of life are near at hand,
without money and without price.
Each of you has the whole wealth
of the universe at your very door.
All that I ever had, and still have, may be yours

"The care of the Earth is our most ancient and most worthy,
and after all, our most pleasing responsibility.
To cherish what remains of it, and to foster its renewal,
is our only hope.
When despair for the world grows in me
and I wake in the night at the least sound
in fear of what my life and my children’s life may be,
I go and lie down where the wood drake rests
in his beauty on the water, and the great heron feeds.
I come into the peace of wild things who do not
tax their lives with forethought of grief.
I come into the presence of still water.
And I feel above me the day-blind stars
waiting with their light.
For a time I rest in the grace of the world,
and am free."

"What has gone wrong, probably, is that we have failed
to see ourselves as part of a large and indivisable whole.
For too long, we have based our lives on a primitive feeling
that our "God-given" role was to have "dominion over
the fish of the sea and over the fowl of the air and
over every living thing that moveth upon the earth."
We have failed to understand that the
earth does not belong to us, but we do the earth."

Rolf Edberg

"How can you buy or sell the sky, the warmth of the land?
The idea is strange to us.
If we do not own the freshness of the air
and the sparkle of the water, how can you buy them?
We are part of the Earth, and it is part of us...
We know the white man does not understand our ways.
One portion of land is the same to him as the next -
for he is a stranger who comes in the night
and takes from the land whatever he needs."

Chief Seattle, 1854

"If a tree falls in the forest, does anybody hear?
Anybody hear the forest fall?
Cut and move on and take out the trees
take out wildlife at a rate of a species every single day
take out people who lived with this for 100,000 years -
inject a billion burgers of beef -
grain eaters - methane dispensers -
Through thinning ozone,
waves fall on wrinkled earth -
gravity, light, ancient refuse of stars,
speak of a drowning -
but this, this is something other,
busy monster eats dark holes in the spirit world
where wild things have to go to disappear forever...
If a tree falls in the forest, does anybody hear?
Anybody hear the forest fall?

Bruce Cockburn,

"I am pessimistic about the human race
Because it is too ingenious for its own good.

"Alone in space, alone in its life-supporting systems,
powered by inconceivable energies, mediating
them to us through the most delicate adjustments,
wayward, unlikely, unpredictable, but nourishing,

is this not a precious home for all of us earthlings?
Is it not worth our love?

"The human brain now holds the key to our future.

"So I felt this burning summer. In form I might
belong to humankind; in reality I seemed one of a
ravenous self-destroying horde of rats.
I am glad there is no God. If there were,

insatiably self-centred creatures should
be allowed to survive a single day more".

John Fowles,

"We’ve got to save the world
Someone’s children, they may need it.
So far we’ve seen
The big business of extinction bleed it.
We’ve got to save the world.
We’re at the mercy of the few,
With evil hearts determined to
Reduce this planet to hell,
Then find a buyer and make a quick sale.
We’ve got to save the world
Someone else may want to use it.
It’s time you knew
How close we’ve come.
We’ve gonna lose it - we gotta save,
we gotta save, we gotta save the world".

George Harrison,
Beatles singer - "Save the World"

"Putting ecological politics into actions means approaching life
with imagination and intelligence, knowledge and emotion,
responsibility and culture. It fights against bureaucracy
and ideology, uniformity, authoritarianism, and any attempt
to eliminate diversity and autonomy. And to everyone
it offers a new friend: the Earth’.

Mario Signorino, President and Founder
Amici della Terra Italia
(Friends of the Earth, Italy)

"Most people are on the world, not in it - have
no conscious sympathy or relationship to anything about them -
undiffused, separate, and rigidly alone
like marbles of polished stone, touching but separate...
How hard to realize that every camp of men or beast
has this glorious starry firmament for a roof! In such places
standing alone on the mountain-top it is easy to realize
that whatever special nests we make - leaves and moss like the marmots
and birds, or tents or piled stone - we all dwell in a house of one room -
the world with the firmament for its roof - and are sailing the
celestial spaces without leaving any track..."

John Muir, 1888

"Hurt not the earth, neither the sea, nor the trees".

Revelation 7:3

"Now that green has become the fashionable prestige color,
we should be careful not to be diverted or misled by products,
projects, technologies, or institutions that may proclaim
themselves ‘green’ but in reality use this as a cover to continue
exploit both nature and people. Our fear is that the
rhetoric of ecology will be used by the power structures
to confuse and mislead. Policies that are designed
by corporate interests or on their behalf are being drawn up in
nice-sounding ecological terms such as ‘sustainable development’
and ‘forestry action plans’. Environmentalists therefore have to
continue to give deep interpretations and clear analysis of the
ecological crisis, and to have critiques of the false solutions."

S.M. Mohd. Idris,
Friends of the Earth, Malaysia

"If the environment can't support beavers, ducks or moose,
how long will it be able to support people?

Commemorative Stamp Bulletin

"We all moan and groan about the loss of the quality of life
through the destruction of our ecology, and yet each
one of us, in our own little comfortable ways,
contributes daily to that destruction.
It’s time now to awaken in each one of us the
respect and attention our beloved Mother deserves."

Ed Asner,
American actor

"The multiple threats to the Earth are so complex
that in most cases they seem beyond the reach of an
average citizen’s influence. Yet we can all launch a
personal campaign to reduce consumption - though perhaps
only after a change of mind-set, to overcome the fear of
seeming poor, parsimonious or eccentric.
This does not mean being deprived or uncomfortable.
It simply means stopping to think, before each purchase,
‘Do I really need this?’ For years a small minority has been living
and thinking thus. If a large majority did lilkewise -
if frugality and shabbiness could become trendy - then the Earth,
though not saved, would be measurably less endangered."

Dervla Murphy,
Irish Author

"If we love our children, we must love our earth
with tender care and pass it on, diverse and beautiful,
so that on a warm spring day 10,000 years hence
they can feel peace in a sea of grass,
can watch a bee visit a flower,
can hear a sandpiper call in the sky,
and can find joy in being alive".

Hugh H. Iltis

"Our cities must be decentralized into communities, or
ecocommunnities, exquisitely and artfully tailored to
the carrying capacity of the ecosystems in which they are located.
Our technologies must be readapted and advanced into ecotechnologies,
exquisitely and artfully adapted to make use of local energy sources
and materials, with minimal or no pollution of the environment.
We must recover a new sense of our needs -
needs that foster a healthful life and express our individual
proclivities, not "needs" dictated by the mass media.
We must restore the human scale in our environment
and in our social relations..."

Ecology Action East Manifesto

"But it is important to realize we are all trapped in mental constructs,
and so we separate ourselves from reality;
the whole world loses its aliveness- or, rather,
we lose our ability to sense that aliveness,
the sacredness of nature.
When we approach nature through the conceptualizing mind,
we see a forest as a commodity, a concept.
We no longer see it for what it truly is,
but for what we want to use it as. It is reduced.
This is how it becomes possible for humans to
destroy the planet without realizing what they are doing."

Eckhart Tolle

Isla Mujeres. Wilma is a Cat 4 right now, headed directly toward the tip of the Yucatan, where Isla Mujeres sits. The island could be hit by the NE eyewall. They are forecasting a 7-11 ft storm surge, and the pic of the island posted doesn't show any high ground at all.

Please, everybody, say a prayer for all the folks there, especially mexicoxpat.

About this product:
NHC forecast tracks of the center can be in error; the average track forecast errors in recent years was used to construct the areas of uncertainty for the 3 days (solid white area). There is also uncertainty in the NHC intensity forecasts. The intensity forecast chart and table provide intensity forecast and intensity forecast uncertainty information.
This display shows an approximate representation of coastal areas under a hurricane warning (red), hurricane watch (pink), tropical storm warning (blue) and tropical storm watch (yellow). The orange circle indicates the current position of the center of the tropical cyclone. The black line and dots show the National Hurricane Center (NHC) forecast track of the center at the times indicated. The letter inside the dot indicates the NHC's forecast intensity for that time.
It is also important to realize tropical cyclones are not a point. Their effects can span many hundreds of miles from the center. The area experiencing hurricane force (one-minute average wind speeds of at least 74 mph) and tropical storm force (one-minute average wind speeds of 39-73 mph) winds can extend well beyond the white areas shown enclosing the most likely track area of the center. The distribution of hurricane and tropical storm force winds in this tropical cyclone can be seen in the Cumulative Wind Distribution graphic displayed below.

162. Oh Mexicoxpat, I fear so much for you
''This one might be like Gilbert or worse. It's much stronger already," said German Garcia, 26, a shrimp fisherman, leaning into the wind on the beach on the beach at Puerto Juarez. He and other fishermen moved their boats to Isla Mujeres, an island about 15 miles northeast of Cancun, which has a large semiprotected lagoon.

However, other residents worried that the island would not withstand the hurricane. ''If the hurricane hits here, we can forget about Isla Mujeres. It will disappear," said Octavio Flores, a boat builder, who moored his 50-foot catamaran on the island.

He recalled that during Gilbert, the ocean covered the island, washing dozens of boats to sea and killing at least 17 fishermen. Yesterday, more than 4,000 residents were already evacuated from the island, although officials said hundreds were refusing to leave.

http://www.boston.com/news/world/latinamerica/articles/2005/10/21/mexico_resort_area_braces_as_wilma_nears/

For the record for those who don't know, Isla Mujeres is where she is trying to ride it out. I am trying to find info on how it is faring so far, but am having little luck. Just viewing the radar image however, it looks like a direct hit, and with an extremely slow moving storm at that. http://www.ssd.noaa.gov/PS/TROP/DATA/RT/float-ir4-loop.html Isla Mujeres is a small island, not shown on this map, just off the northeastern tip of the peninsula there, the Yucatan.

I hope against all hope that she will somehow make it through. Please, let it be so.

172. 40 inches?!?!?!?! I just heard on CNN that a lot of hotel guests
Edited on Fri Oct-21-05 06:52 AM by fleabert
from the Marriot were sent to the hotel's shelter in downtown Cancun. If they get half the amount of rain predicted, it's going to be bad. The island part of Cancun (and isla mujeres) will have to deal with wind and battering seas, plus rain, but downtown will just be completely flooded and windswept.

OMG. I hope we hear from mexicoxpat soon, I am sending out my strongest hopes and vibes and prayers, and everything else I can think of...

171. Here is a map with Cancun, where mexicopat is, and an image of Wilma:

I am very, very worried about her - she's on "a little island off Cancun."

Here's the WATER VAPOR image:

Here's the page with the various images and loops:

175. I think this is where mexicoxpat lives...
http://www.islamujeresonline.com.mx/

isla mujeres is a gorgeous island, north of the touristy part of cancun (the 'hotel zone' is shaped like a 7, west and southwest of downtown Cancun) and both of these areas are in completely open ocean.

And that storm is just getting started, I'm afraid.

Thanks for this image. I've never been in the area and had no idea of its geography. Here's a closeup of Cancun from a Google Image search:

178. I have spent a lot of time in that area, I cannot even imagine
how devastated it will be after wilma. mexicoxpat, and everyone else will need help after it is over to get back to normal.

I wish we knew what was happening, but I can't find any coverage. I know there are reporters on the fifth floor of one of the marriots in the hotel zone, the manager phoned in to CNN earlier this morning. I also wonder how Cuba is faring...I know they are uber prepared and have a fantastic hurricane response team, but this looks really bad.

173. Hang in there pat. It looks like it's going to ...
get worse before it gets better. Our local weather man here in Tampa says Wilma is expected to strengthen to a category 5 and then go into the northern tip of the Yucatan and hang out until early Sunday. While it's there it is expected to weaken to a category 2 or 3 before moving off and heading for Ft. Myers where it's now expected to make landfall on Monday night. Bottom line is the time table keeps slowing down but the track still hasn't changed. Stay safe please.

Just checking in to see if she'd posted anymore.

Looks like there's nothing we can do but pray or send protective energy her way. She's in the middle of it now. My gut is churning just thinking about it.

This thread will help keep our protective energy flowing and strong.

I hope it's strong enough.

191. I understand. I was alone for Charley too, but he wasn't as strong at that
time as Wilma will be when she crosses your path. When the eye nears, please seek shelter in your innermost room! I wish I had some comforting words, but hurricanes are scary as hell imo.Hopefully Wilma will pass by you quickly and the eye won't make a direct hit. Please let us know that you are safe as soon as you're able to get online again!

I'm here over on the coast in the Tarpon Springs area, and I am very worried about storm surge and the fact that there are 100's of thousands of people in Hills, Pinellas and Pasco that can not evacuate even if they had to. Man I hope this thing goes in between FL ad Cuba.

to Isla Mujeres. Is that where you are, MexicoPat?

We're in NC--I'm in Chapel Hill. My husband and I bought property in Bocas del Toro, Panama. I'm coming down next month to make some decisions about options choices for the place we've contracted to build.

We looked at Belize, too, but decided on Bocas area because in 140 years of recorded hurricane history, Bocas has never been hit--it's below the hurricane belt.

Hope you are doing o.k. We're all thinking about you.
