Cheney on the ropes, Bush looking at replacement Veeps?
Rumors abound that the prosecutor could name Cheney as a co-conspirator, but absolving Bush, probably under the theory Bush lacks the mens res. How can he be guilty of any scheme that required, well, scheming?

Neil Lisst has learned there is a short list of possible VP applicants Bush could go with, in case Cheney has to go. It's in today's Neil Lisst political comic, and it just went up at 11:45PM Central.

2. According to the constitution, he doesn't have a choice, does he?
I thought the constitution said the Speaker of the House is next in line.

3. No the speaker is next in line if both the president
and the vice president are out of the picture.

Spiro Agnew was vp under Nixon. He resigned because he was guilty of tax evasion (I think it was) and Nixon appointed a new vp. I think the Senate had to confirm Nixon's choice.

8. yeah, it's something like that
Nixon thought by making Ford his Veep, he could stop the juggernaut to force him out. He thought Ford was so stupid there was no way Nixon would get pushed out in Ford's favor.

It's one of the later amendments to the constitution, I believe.

10. Suppose Cheney resigns, and Hastern impeaches Bush?
That would drop the situation into the lap of the Senate, who could decide whether to remove the pres, or to first accept his VP nominee, then decide on removal.

12. He did have a leadership post, but not speaker... at the time
Edited on Thu Oct-20-05 12:38 AM by Tom Joad
the house was majority Democrat (like it was for decades before the catastrophe of the 90's). I think he was house minority leader.

Theoretically, nixon could have nominated his dentist. His dentist could then be vice president, so long as he was constitutionally qualified (born in the u.s.a., and over 35) and big if here, both houses of congress approved.

I suspect Nixon's dentist would have been a better golfer.

Edited for spelling.

15. Ghouliani is as warm and fuzzy as a buzz saw on plate glass.
Also, his idea of human rights might make Rummy look liberal:

Mr. Giuliani said he visited Haiti two weeks ago and met with several officials, including President Duvalier. "Political repression is not the major reason for leaving Haiti," Mr. Giuliani said. He said he reached that conclusion after Mr. Duvalier personally assured him that Haitians returning home from the United States were not persecuted.

(sorry link is sort of indirect, but the incident is quite famous.)

18. Rudy G. was circling the drain when 9/11 saved him
I don't see him as being electable as VP or President.

I don't think Bush would appoint him because Bush wants someone with limited stature, so their stature comes far behind his.

And shrub doesn't like any smartypants types around him making him look dumb. But my guess is moderate repubs will try push a middle of the road type (like Ford was).

20. I'm feeling good about this Cheney resignation thing!
I try to make the comic funny, but I try to make it a political editorial, too. I do believe Cheney is going down on this.

This had to be Cheney, and he had to be behind the forged docs.
