Remember the reports we were hearing early on, about Cheney and Libby's many visits to the CIA? And how some analysts were feeling pressured and intimidated, as if Cheney wanted to force a certain outcome (the CIA telling the Administration "yes, Sadaam has weapons).

There is NO way that Cheney was not involved in the outing of Plame.

10. they were used because people like miller are on the payroll
WASHINGTON - It was called the White House Iraq Group and its job was to make the case that Saddam Hussein had nuclear and biochemical weapons.

So determined was the ring of top officials to win its argument that it morphed into a virtual hit squad that took aim at critics who questioned its claims, sources told the Daily News.

--snip

Besides Rove and Libby, the group included senior White House aides Karen Hughes, Mary Matalin, James Wilkinson, Nicholas Calio, Condoleezza Rice and Stephen Hadley. WHIG also was doing more than just public relations, said a second former intel officer.

"They were funneling information to Judy Miller. Judy was a charter member," the source said.

31. Hey, I'll take every little win we get!
Just saying, I know everything said here is true and very important, but just hearing he said those words means those words are reaching an audience that may have not have heard those words before.

So, it's really a good thing. It's the only way some people are ever going to know what's been going on. Has to be on the news. I know it makes them seem innocent, what a joke, they aren't saying everything that went on, but it starts the people down that path of thinking about a corrupt admin, which is the most important. I think. My head hurts.

Now go back to bashing, because it's fantastic to see these sobs start to lose. I never watch that stuff, I do CNN lite and CBS, so I depend on hearing about the good stuff on here.

45. Your analysis of psychology, hairball cheap shill,
character black holes and rude thoughtless whoring should be required reading.
Four years of desperate preaching, teaching and pleading and still well over half that empty faith crowd thinks and repeats that Sadaam was behind the tragedies of September eleventh, two thousand one.
He has to make a slow, agonized turnaround, allowing all the anti-intellectuals to feel his pain--might be the best thing to happen to public thought in years.
Hairball Tweety might become a hero to moderate conservatives...and we'd let him, with enthusiasm.

60. Thanks, and yours too
I sure hope that's not a slam, and not that I'd argue, because I know my attitude toward the change in corporate media might sound shillish. It could. And, if it did, and the reason I ask, is all I'd do is apologize. It sounds as if you mean I'm right on the mark, required reading? I hope that's what you mean, and I thank you if that's the case. :)

Gosh, I mean, I don't know how many people I've stepped away from over the politics, the war and the bastard Bush. It still hurts my feelings. And, it wasn't as if I, or most people, ever tried to come off as know-it-all's, or as if we were superior. It was never about that, never about being better, or being "right" or being selfish. The war was wrong, it was always wrong, and until the American people can admit to themselves it was wrong, along with so many other things, it just won't matter.

"He has to make a slow, agonized turnaround, allowing all the anti-intellectuals to feel his pain--might be the best thing to happen to public thought in years.'

That describes how I perceive it exactly. A bitter pill. The man they defended, again and again and again, turns out to have deserved no defense at all. Those many "they" folks are going to have to come to terms with this. I guess it goes without saying we're going to have to let them, and it's better to facilitate it than to pounce on it. Leave off the "I told you so"s. Hard to do though.

Sometimes, like today, I wake up in the wee hours of the morning, 2 AM this time. I have all this quiet time to think, and all I can think about is the horrible things happening, and the more horrible things "they" are planning to let happen. I wonder how anyone can allow it, and I worry most about the people not worried at all. How can you be hateful and so sorry for people at the same time.

They're the ones that are going to go stark raving mad. But, I'm sure you already knew that. Everything they believe in is about to all come crashing down, unless I'm badly mistaken.

It's still a total mystery to me how this has happened to our nation. To see the glib crap I used to say actually happen. To see it actually happen in a big way, a real life-ending way. In some ways, it makes me feel like a creep. A jerk. To have ever laughed. Now I just cry. There's absolutely nothing to be done but to share the truth, and right now, the truth is nothing but sadness.

Talking to other people on here is more cheerful, even if it's typically about depressing things.

63. Historically, chiefly under democratic congresses,
political thought was, generally, ahead of that of Joe Public. The issues surrounding the social changes of forty years ago did not affect most of white America and the U S congress looked visionary and future oriented, incurring the wrath and demonization of the regressive haters, mostly republicans.
The same sort of faith-based analysis and reality filtering that allows fortune tellers to flourish and even achieve a measure of respect keeps this illegitimate administration afloat. The selective filters, which, apparently, burden a majority of humankind, help create an illusion of reality, specifically: The habit of only counting the hits. A common malady, counting the hits consists of only reporting the successes, not failures, thereby elevating the illusion makers' own warped egos and improving their status among their fellows. The curious willingness to recast misses as conditional hits and then as solid successes and still not recognize the inherent lies is shocking.
In short, the inmates have, indeed, taken over the asylum, the children have captured the school and any adult input is drowned out by sticking fingers in ears and yelling nyaaa, nyaaa, nyaaa at the accusers.
Profound misfortune is probably the only teacher they'll pay heed to, yelling for adults to be put back in charge when the destruction is complete.
I found your spare and profound description quite inspiring.

73. Thank you
Know what's funny? No, just ironic, I guess. For years now, I've been watching, and worrying, and doing that back and forth, until now the problems with our government and our society/life styles are undeniable. Now, now that I believe I realize it's time, that it's time to "do something", like move out of the county, I'm more reluctant than I thought I'd be. I feel more reluctant to do anything, almost like what I accuse the "everyone else" of doing. As if if I put off doing anything, it will postpone the various problems we predict.

And it's funny to because I feel like, even if my family didn't move anywhere else, things around us are going to change. It's as if we're going to be moving, whether we want to move or not.

I agree with your final statement "Profound misfortune is probably the only teacher they'll pay heed to..."

I can't even say I'm not part of that group, in more ways than I'm comfortable with, I'm sure. I've steadfastly not filled up all our water bottles yet. Stuff like that and more, there are so many life-and-death details to remember. All I know is, oh lord, I don't want to see my family and so many others around me, near and far, learn the hard way. It's the most permanent, but it's usually the worst way to learn.

It helps to share the thoughts. For the many people that, even now, don't perceive serious problems, there doesn't seem to be much to say. Time will tell.

Hey, "spare and profound description quite inspiring" is about the nicest thing anyone ever said about what I wrote, I aim for spare! I appreciate your nice comments and great posts :)

49. When the line between reporting on the facts and
manipulating the delivery of those facts to influence the consumer disappears, the underlying conversation that the messenger has with himself to justify his behavior must resemble a deal with the devil.
Suing a talking head when he's made the move from message presenter to propagandist should be a civic duty, a legal requirement, almost.

now, even if Matthews was a shrub shill too.

The fact is, if the message is that "the media was used", well, obviously the ones using them were shrubco. This helps lead the many remaining thick, ignorant Americans to the conclusion that the case for war was phony, which is obvious to most, but there are still substantial holdouts on this.

47. And Tucker Carlson Was On Blaming Democrats
For not opposing the war enough in the beginning, even though he and his kind were trashing and suppressing those who oppose the war as whackjobs during that time.

58. They ALLOWED themselves to be used...
I voraciously read foreign papers during the lead up to the Iraq war and knew there were no WMDs and that Bush was lying. Anyone with a questioning brain knew there was no connection between Al Queda and the more secular Saddam Hussein.

Why didn't the Dem reps and senators know these things if I, a schlub, knew them?

The press was still drinking from the 9/11 Kool Aid that said the country was united (it was not) and that it needed healing so it was good to stand behind the commander in chief.

65. How's that possible? Because
the media are owned by people who have an interest in the Bush-gang obtaining its goals, one of which is for large corporations to make more profit, which is good for the owners of those corporations (same ones who own the media).

So if the media "were used" it's because they wanted to be used.

For their ratings, not integrity and not because they were lied too.

69. What is the Media going to say next?
That they were KIDDING?

GODDAMN Corporate Warmongers, half of their companies are making WAR MACHINES (NBC/GE) and the other half are PUSHING FOR WAR.

The MEDIA needs to be dragged in handcuffs and shackles to the Hague alone with the rest of the White House Frog Marching Brigade.

MURDERERS. Every last One of THEM.
