I watched the movie Cold Mountain last night.
Jude Law had a line " Go Fight a War with a Flag and a Lie."Also at end of the movie, Allison Krause performed a song "Scarlet Tide" that had words that made me thing of bush's war.One line, "Swindlers Who Act Like Kings."

1. Yeah but Rene Zellweger stole the movie...
Jude and Nicole were like extras, IMO.

8. Yeah, she did!
I like Nicole, but I think she's overrated as an actress. Rene's good in just about everything she does.

29. I haven't seen that one...The Hours I liked...
She did pretty well in that one, I thought. So did Meryl Streep and Julianne Moore.

It's a very good movie and one I highly recommend.

The problem I had with Nicole in Cold Mountain was that her accent sounded so fake to me.

11. How DARE you talk about my man that way!
Oh wait, I forgot...I had to kick Jude to the curb for sleeping with the nanny, the rat bastard. Crap. Who should I have a crush on now?

2. It took me 4 tries to get through that movie.
:boring: :boring: :boring:

It had its moments, but something about it (the pace?) lulled me to sleep.

That was the impression I got.

6. Actually, it was supposed to be a re-telling of Homer's Odyssey
Jude Law was Odessius (sorry, but too lazy to look up the spelling) and Nicole as Penelope.

I could kind of follow the updated version of Homer in a few places ... like the women who tempted Jude to stay like the sirens ... but other parts went right over my head. I guess it's been a while since I've read Homer.

26. Book was great
I strongly disagree there. It affected me deeply.

One thing I liked was the way it showed the impact on the average person. The total disillusionment soldiers felt at the end of the war. And the fact that all southern people were not married to the southern cause. The author got it right that the mountain people were more sympathetic to the north. Then, the Union army blew in, stole their livestock, took everything not nailed down and usually burned their homes. And that ended that.

7. It was really a sad immitation of the book
I was very moved by the story and really looked forward to the movie. What a letdown!

Why is it every time they try to make a good book in to a movie they only manage to fuck it up? Frazier's Cold Mountain and Grisham's A Painted House are two in recent memory for me. I haven't seen Seabiscuit for this very reason. The book was wonderful and I fear the movie will be a big disappointment.

It used to be a picture was worth a thousand words and movies could say so much more than a book. That sure doesn't seem to be the case anymore.

16. Seabiscuit is a wonderful movie
But you won't enjoy it if departures from fact or smoothing rough edges for a more golden-hued nostalgic tone bother you. It's a fine bit of work in its own right (but no, it isn't exemplary, like the book).

30. I plan to give it a shot
I don't have a problem with different; I have a problem with bad.

I know a movie isn't going to be exactly the same as the book or even tell the story in the exact same way. But it should at least honor the original telling rather than pulling out one small thread of a story and holding it up as a substitute for the whole - as they did with Cold Mountain.

From the trailers of Seabiscuit, I had the impression that it at least honored the book if it did no more. I accept your recommendation and look forward to finding out.

and Renee made it - but her line - they create the rain in the first place and then cry that its raining

really pharaphrased there - but I loved that line.

14. It's one of my favorite lines of all time...
Renee blew me away. I didn't care all that much for Nicole's character, but all the others were memorable and had a great deal of depth.

Now, I want to watch it again :)

23. That was one of the most awful movies I have ever seen.
So long. So boring. So desperate for Oscars.

Zellweger's "They made the rain and then they say, 'IT'S RAININ!!'" is one of the most unintentionally funny things I've ever seen.
