House GOP Leaders Set to Cut Spending
Leadership Shake-Up Spurred Policy Shift

By Jonathan Weisman
Washington Post Staff Writer
Monday, October 17, 2005; Page A01

House Republican leaders have moved from balking at big cuts in Medicaid and other programs to embracing them, driven by pent-up anger from fiscal conservatives concerned about runaway spending and the leadership's own weakening hold on power.

Beginning this week, the House GOP lawmakers will take steps to cut as much as $50 billion from the fiscal 2006 budget for health care for the poor, food stamps and farm supports, as well as considering across-the-board cuts in other programs. Only last month, then-House Majority Leader Tom DeLay (Tex.) and other GOP leaders quashed demands within their party for budget cuts to pay for the soaring cost of hurricane relief.

<snip>
But Republicans could be taking a big risk by cutting Medicaid programs while their standing in the polls has plummeted and Democrats gear up for a fight. "We have seen a sea change in the budget policies of House Republicans," said Thomas S. Kahn, the Democratic staff director of the House Budget Committee. "Clearly, the RSC's influence over their budget policies is in the ascendancy."

1. Cut much now, restore a very little bit near election time...
...is how the Repugs will try to play this. The important thing is to translate this into the sort of alarm that removes the lice who work for the corporations and vested interests instead of the people.

They have made it harder with very shady gerrymandering and voter role purging, but with aggressive registrations drives and get out the vote efforts, I am sure these problems can be overcome.

They are saying, "You'll pay for what we want, when we want it. Your needs are are unimportant, we have an empire to build"...

3. Aren't these the biggest bunch of jerks ever??
It isn't saying much, but I had to say it, again. What a bunch of assholes. This is such a whacked-out country to wake up in anymore, I swear, every friggin day the news is another insult to our intelligence, an affront to our rights and a threat to our safety.

In the name of their godless dollar. I know this isn't much of a contribution. What gets me is how often this stuff is happening though, literally every week now. Insults, affronts and threats. From these damned leaders. Of ours. May they rot in the hell of their own creation.

5. Ending the war on drugs would fix the deficit....
AND leave money for any emergency relief and rebuilding.
Why aren't they suggesting that instead?

What great spiritual figure, who lived 2005 years ago and is associated with Chrisianity, suggested this?

Hint: So-called Republican "Christians" will not have a clue.

9. 'I was hungry and you gave me food
'I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink'...Then the righteous will answer him, 'Lord, when was it that we saw you hungry and gave you food, or thirsty and gave you something to drink?...'Truly I tell you, just as you did it to one of the least of these who are members of my family, you did it to me.' Matthew 25:35, 37, 40

10. Even further proof to show FReepers that this is nothing like WWII
a) During WWII, we had already beaten Germany AND Japan by this point.

b) During WWII, the president did not set records for vacation time. And this was even in spite of his health problems.

c) During WWII, people from all walks of life were asked to (and generally did) make sacrifices, not just the lower and middle class

d) During WWII, the President did not attempt to "jumpstart the economy" by passing tax cut after tax cut after tax cut for the wealthiest Americans

e) During WWII, people who belived that the war was necessary to protect our home and our freedom actually enlisted
