Stupid things people say in regard to sports-politics
I was at Gecko's in Itaewon, a very popular western style restaurant in Seoul, Korea. One of the guys with us says, "I hope the White Sox lose."
I'm a White Sox and so I aksed why. His answer, "Because Guillen's unAmerican. He's friends with Hugo Chavez and Chavez hates the US"
I asked him how that makes Guillen un-American?
He said he's a traitor to his country.
I pointed out to him The Guillen is from Venezuela. He was unaware of this. And I pointed out to him that a congratulatory call from a sitting President of any country hardly makes you his friend.

In fairness to my conservative friend, I am sure there are as many examples of stupid sports-politics things that liberals say and do. Like I'm sure there are some who hope the Astros lose because scrubbie is from Texas.

I guess I don't really get the Blue State-red state thing when it comes to sports. Especially since most of the players on both teams are probably homophobes and many are conservative. White Sox outfielder Car Everett said in an interview last summer that homo-
sexuality is wrong and that gay-marriage should NEVER be allowed.

On that note, I came to Korea from Chicago. I am a Sox fan. Go Sox.

1. Cons hate the White Sox. The Sox's represents the South Side of
Chicago. The south side is where the working man lives.

6. My theory on White Sox fans
They are just as loyal as the Cub fans. But, White Sox fans tend to be found in a lower economic bracket. There are lots on the South Side, in Joliet, Hammond, IN and East Chicago, IN. They can't afford to shell out the kind of money for season tix the way Cub fans do. Let's be honest with ourselves. For all the attention lavished on the Cubs what has it profited the city? A White Sox fan is like a Jets fan in football, or an American soccer fan. A very loyal bunch, who suffer their teams defeat and celebrate their victories with great joy. Plus, for White Sox fans, going to the game is about the game, it's not a ritzy "See-and-be-seen" affair.

Go Sox

2. Politics - like sports - is discussed in terms of us vs them.
Not a lot of people delve too far beneath the surface on either topic. A true sports fan of any sport enjoys a good play done by either team...

Go Sox! It was great to see them win the Pennant. I hope they get the whole enchilada!

4. There Are Also Cubans On The White Sox...
Orlando Hernandez and Jose Contreras played for the Cuban National team...but, of course, they came here for the freedom...millions and millions of dollars worth of freedom :sarcasm:

Sounds like this guy would have favored changing the name of the Cincinatti Reds to the Red-Legs cause it sounded to "commie".

Go White Sox!!!!

7. Actually, one of the things I like about the Sports forum here is that..
its pretty much free of politics. Its a refreshing respite at times.

8. I guess living down state where the majority of people vote
republican and either root for the Cubs or Cardinals has made me bitter. I pray that the White Sox wins this World Series. It would be a slap in the face to the republican co-worker at work who said the American League is weak this year because the White Sox are in the World Series.
