"Colorado Team Wins 2005 Solar Decathlon"

WASHINGTON (AP) - The University of Colorado designed the most attractive and energy-efficient solar-powered home, besting teams from Cornell and California Polytechnic State universities to win the 2005 Solar Decathlon Friday.

Eighteen college teams from the United States, Canada and Spain were judged in the competition on architecture, livability, comfort and how well the homes provided energy for space heating and cooling, hot water, lighting, and appliances, according to a news statement from the U.S. Department of Energy.

Each house in the solar village on the National Mall also had to produce enough extra power for an electric car. A CU team won the competition in 2002.
