Chinese channel on Dish Network, I just now discovered it.
My SO is a Dish installer and he gets lots of calls from people who have problems which 99% of the time are 'pilot error', so to speak. When he's not home and these calls come in, I can usually talk them through whatever the've mucked up but today a guy who we know pretty well called trying to get channel 265, the Chinese CCTV channel but couldn't locate it. Turns out he didn't have it 'unlocked' so couldn't access it, but neither my partner or myself had ever even noticed it or put it into the on-screen guide. It is a VERY interesting and well done source of info.

Just a heads up for any Dish users who might have overlooked it as we did. :D

1. Is this a Chinese Language channel that's made here in the U.S.? or from
Taiwan or China itself?

Do you understand the Chinese, or is it subtitled?

3. Apparently it comes from China but the audio is in English w/ Chinese sub
titles. I've only been watching for a couple hours but it does not appear to be originating in the USA. It seems to be fairly politically neutral so far...

4. It's CCTV9, China's English-language channel
although it has some subtitled features.

I don't know why we can get that but can't get any of the real BBC or CBC channels.

5. It's the Chinese Communist Party's international propaganda channel...
Quite frankly, I am surprised that it is allowed to be broadcast in the US.

That being said, the international news is still better than anything else on Dish Network. Very rarely do you get an "Eastern" persepctive on the news. I am also very impressed with some of their cultural programming.

It's a very interesting (and addictive) channel to watch. I would rather watch it than the usual talking head channels.

7. I agree...mostly, but I haven't -yet- seen all that much propaganda,
no more, at least, than from, oh, say CNN. :D

And I can see myself becoming semi-addicted as well. ;-)

12. It's a sad commentary on American media when...
Chinese state run television can provide more substantive and more accurate information than the country with the "free" press...

I think they got a few former BBC employees working with them, which would explain its sophisticated and intelligent presentation. If you really want to kill time, the Chinese also run a Spanish and French channel, which Dish Network carries and its location is somewhere in the 800s...

8. International News
I have DirecTV and there isn't much to chose from. I was saddened when NWI (News World International) went off the air. I think if I had to deal with only American news after the last election I would have pulled out my hair. They replaced it with Current TV which is cool but still not NWI.

9. have you tried LINK?
We were pleasantly surprised by this channel on directTV. Loads of international news, international music, and recently there was a full evening of Bill Moyer speeches when they were doing fundraising.

It's a nice addition, I think.

Bahrain, Iranian and other middle east teevee channels.

I don't speak a word of arabic, so it's all lost on me!!!

(We're in France and have satellite teevee)
