Just got back from "Good Night, and Good Luck".
Very timely and well done.

I hope enough people see it for it to have some influence.

Of the acting jobs I think I was most impressed by Frank Langella as the head of CBS.

1. I saw it today too and I loved it as well!
I thought the black and white and the use of real footage for McCarthy were great effects. The casting was terrific as well.

What did you think of David Strathairn who played Murrow?

I love David Strathairn. He's been in so many movies. I hope he finally gets some much deserved recognition for this.

8. Did they read the exact transcripts for his broadcasts?
I was wondering that. I thought that they had to have.

10. I would hope so but I don't know. They should have the file footage,
I'd think.

9. Funny thing: some test screen audiences thought the "actor" playing Joe
McCarthy was hamming it up too much, didn't realize it was actual footage of the big bully, LOL.

17. Heard Clooney on NPR say they realized they couldn't use an actor
because if the actor did an anywhere-near creditable job of impersonating McCarthy, every reviewer in the world would pan the actor for hamming it up too much. Apparently Clooney was right.

3. You're lucky you saw it; I looked for it in our huge
theatre this weekend (SE Houston) - no dice. I hope to be able to see it soon; they're spending lots on advertising on tv.

5. Movie's site lists Houston as Oct 14 release, must be another part of town
http://wip.warnerbros.com/goodnightgoodluck/

Here in Dallas it just has an "art house" theater release. I hope that it gets a broader release.

Even if it doesn't, if it gets Oscar buzz and awards, that will compel a broader release after the holidays.

7. The theater was packed when I saw it
and I saw it at 1 pm. I was surprised so many had come to see it.

I loved the movie. I'm concerned because we brought our 18 year old. She enjoyed it and was very glad that she saw the movie but said that she hadn't planned to see it because it was in black and white. (She thought we were seeing something else.) I hope other youth don't avoid the movie for this reason.

12. I loved the black and white effect and I am 17.
Then again, I'm a political-history junkie so I love this stuff. :P

I think at least part of the reason for doing it all in b&w is so that the footage of McCarthy would look like it was a real "part" of the movie. It would look odd if everything was in color and they put McCarthy in in black and white.

14. She loved the B&W too
I didn't make my point clearly. She wouldn't have gone to see it because it was in B&W. I generally prefer movies in color and often thenk B&W is overused for affect. I liked it for this movie, though.

20. B&W hearkens back to the 50s; it also
emphasizes to me that, regardless of what year or era we're talking about, there will always be evil people who are not doing things for the benefit of our country. I heard there are many correlations in this movie, and we're living them.

21. Me too. It also reminded me that no matter how powerful
those evil people are, they always eventually fall.

23. Well two of my favorite movies are in B&w:
Witness for the Prosecution and To Kill a Mockingbird. Loved those.

But yeah, I've been a news junkie for a long time - I remember when I was 7, immediately turning on CNN to watch the coverage of the OK City bombing. (I don't watch CNN anymore, but that's what DU is for! :))

It doesn't open until next week in Ohio.

You're the 2nd DU'er with a good review that I've seen.

Damn - the waiting is the hardest part...

18. Call your local theaters
... and ask about it. This needs to get into more theaters. It only played in 11 theaters the first week. That increased to only 69 theaters yesterday. It needs to be playing on a lot more screens than this to make any kind of an impact.

Word of mouth... and call those theaters owners.

24. I'm seeing it tomorrow. ..I'm lucky I'm in L.A. 'cause I don't even have
to go to one of the art theatres. It's showing at one of the majors with stadium seating. I can't wait. Clooney is brilliant. I've read so many interviews with him about this movie. He co-wrote and directed it too. I'm glad he used real clips of McCarthy. He said he did it so he wouldn't be accused of going over the top. Plus he said that he checked his facts and had two sources for everthing. My understanding is that the dialogue from Murrow when he's addressing the audience is word for word.
