Torture in Chicago

Panel hears claims of anti-black cop brutality here

WASHINGTON -- Community activists argued before an international human-rights panel Friday that Chicago has a long history of police brutality against blacks and cover-ups by authorities that should be investigated and put in the world's spotlight.

Attorneys for the victims pleaded for an onsite investigation, including interviews of Mayor Daley, to get to the bottom of what they said was the city's record of systematic abuse of blacks at the hands of the police.

No city officials spoke before the three-member panel of the Organization of American States' Inter-American Commission on Human Rights. Daley, traveling to Poland, was unavailable for comment, said spokeswoman Jennifer Martinez.

Bernardine Dohrn, a law professor at Northwestern University and spokeswoman for the Midwest Coalition for Human Rights, said that during a 19-year period ending in 1991, Chicago Police displayed "extreme discrimination and racism" in torturing 135 blacks, and no officers were ever charged or tried.

2. That it's coming to light is a pleasant surprise
I hope to see more and more of this.

And I swear if I EVER see Mr Bill Bennett in person, I'm going to punch him right in the nose. Hurts my feelings and I'm not even black.

Maybe I'm having a pre-life experience, maybe my grandkids or great grandkids will have African American heritage, and maybe I want this white bastard to shut the hell up! Imagine explaining racism to a small child, imagine in America where we're all "equal" explaining that N word, imagine the history to explain, the horrible, horrible history, imagine the pain, and for all that, so many people just don't seem to care, even now. Then this guy. Jerk. Yeah, us whites are taking it personally TOO you over-educated prick of a selfish bastard poor excuse for an American AND a human being and let me see you just ONE time to fix you damned nose if I can't fixed your double-damned attitude. Ugh.

6. CBS - Cops Silent On Torture Charges
Edited on Sat Oct-15-05 08:30 AM by NNN0LHI

(CBS 2) CHICAGO Chicago police officers take the fifth when asked about their association with fired police commander Jon Burge. Burge returned to Chicago Wednesday to face questioning in a pair of lawsuits over allegations he tortured suspects into confessions.

But Burge and his former underlings are all choosing to remain silent. CBS 2 News has obtained tape after tape of video depositions of sworn testimony by Burge’s team of detectives. The group of officers, who allegedly violated the rights of murder suspects, are now exercising their rights under the Fifth Amendment.

Protestors against police torture and family members of torture victims want jail time for Burge and they want answers.

"Enough is enough," said protestor Joan Parkin. "Jon Burge has ruined and destroyed countless lives"

Burge is the former police commander fired after an internal investigation that sustained abuse allegations against him. He was ordered by the court to give a deposition Wednesday along with a team of other detectives under his command that allegedly carried out torture tactics in the cases of 108 men.

Madison Hobley is one of four former death row inmates pardoned in 2003 that are suing the Burge torture squad for their part in their wrongful convictions.

Notice even the usual "why do you bash the police?" squad around here won't even touch this one? I wonder why? I also wonder why they won't take a minute to denounce pond scum like these guys who carry badges? This case rips off the phony facade and they know it. To protect and serve...

5. investigation.
Fitzgerald (of CIA coverup/Plame fame) is also investigating corruption in the Daley administration. Word has it that Daley might ousted as a result.
