A good reason why the conservatives are upset with Miers
I'm listening to Jerry Springer's show from the twelfth and he's talking about how this country really is going more liberal. He talked about how young people were polled about interracial marriage and 95% approve. Nobody ever blinks anymore with that (I'm sure there are still racists people of course) and "Will & Grace" is still going on and popular (I'm not a fan of the show but just because I'm not a fan of the acting). I think today's generation of kids in general are more open-minded about issues where it concerns abortion and gay marriage. This is why, I think, the republicans are trying to make such a big issue out of the "religious right" and make them out to seem more than what they are. I always feel like they are a small minority with loud mouths. Jerry also mentioned how Bush isn't coming out and saying Miers will do away with Roe V Wade because he knows majority of the public is for Roe V Wade. Last time I looked it was 60-70% of the population. The republicans know this too and this is why they've never done anything before with Roe V Wade because it would be political suicide to them if they want to get more moderates and independents and conservative democrats. Miers is a lose-lose situation for Bush. If Miers does come out and state she will do away with Roe V Wade the republicans who don't vote against her will lose in 2006/2008. If she doesn't come out in support of overturning it Bush will lose support from the religious in his base as we've been seeing. They want a "Debate" on the issue and have been waiting for thirty years for this opportunity but Bush is snubbing them in the face. They believed he was one of them and maybe now they're waking up. Why else did he send James Dobson out there? Dobson doesn't know anything I think and is trying to unite the base so the confirmation hearings will go smooth and she'll get through without any of their secrets coming out from the White House counsel.

1. You said
"I always feel like they are a small minority with loud mouths" and I tend to agree with you.

I personally don't see this element as dangerous as many other DU'ers because I don't think they stand a chance in 06 and 08. The worm has turned.

2. Yes, it's interesting - I agree with you
all the issues the far right religious wing is worried about, like gay marriage and even interracial dating matter not a whit to the kids I see downtown. I ride the bus, and I am amazed at the interracial nature of the groups of kids I see (happily amazed), and I also don't see any homophobia among the kids I know. They also are not the least bit prudish in their dress, and that seems to extend across racial and economic lines.

It's got to be driving the conservatives nuts.

On the other hand, these kids do seem to be obsessed with cell phones, iPods, CDs, and other electronic devices. I rarely see them reading or even talking to people around them unless they are in a big group of their friends - and even then, one or two of them will be on the phone.
