The most damning part of the reaction to Miers
Let's face it. We don't trust Clinton when it comes to women. We may not believe all of his accusers but we don't automatically believe what Clinton says when it comes to women. That is because we know his track record in that regard and even as supporters of him, we know his flaws.

Bush's supporters clearly don't trust him when it comes to public policy. They fear he doesn't mean what he says when it comes to his public decisions. Remember these people both know and like Bush. They have watched him for his first term and are his staunchest supporters. Yet, they don't believe him. They think he is a liar. A politician's base knows if he can be trusted and if he can not. The fact that Bush's base doesn't trust him in this instance speaks volumes of his general trustworthiness. Regardless of what kind of Justice Miers turns out to be (if she is confirmed), we know what kind of President even his most fervent supports think he is. There assessment is no less damning than ours. They also think he is a liar who appoints cronies to important posts.

4. I think the conservatives are faking their reaction
It's a ruse. Bush would never appoint someone who wasn't far right wing and they know it. People like Tony Blankley and Ann Coulter have supported virtually everything Bush has done. Don't you think it's fishy that they are now turning on him?

9. I think they are distancing themselves from bush and using this as
the excuse.

They see the writing on the wall - bush is not popular at all.

Two ways to go - stand behind while things get worse - and see huge turnover of power in the next congressional elections (ala 1974)

Or try to minimize the damage - and focus it upon the single person (bushjr) - and be able to regain and take more power in the near future (ala 1994).

I think they want bushjr to morph into bushsr - where HE is the problem, not the party.

The thing is - these folks (GOP puniditry and GOP political strategists) have been off their game for the past year in terms of reading the public sentiment. Taking up the cause of the religious right (which is the rationale given by many who are now criticizing) - is foolish in the sense that most of the public doesn't want a reactionary religious rightie on the supreme court. Just as these folks misread how the public would perceive the Schaivo shenanigans.... these folks seem to be throwing themselves towards the far social right - in an effort to distance from Bush - and stay in power (be it elected power - or monetary power/ala media punditry)... I think that their criticism is a ruse to try to limit the political damage of bushco - to bushco... but in doing so by throwing in with the religious right, they may just seal the fate that they are trying to avoid (that the damage is done party wide.)

5. They know that
They know that he lies and cannot be trusted. They're only interested in one thing from him and will dump him quickly if he doesnt give it.

6. good post, DSC

If his own "base" doesn't trust him, you know he's in trouble.

But then, why should they?

He has betrayed them even more than the rest of us.

Idiots

7. how do you mean when you say we don't trust Clinton
when it comes to woman ?

i hope you don't mean we don't trust him in that he would do anything violent.

when it comes ot the issues he has a very good record on women's rights.

the only "flaw" would be that he has a history of adultery and i would not be surprised to learn he has done it with many others. but i don't believe any of the rumors of him forcing anyone to do anything. if you mean it in this sense then you may have a point. but i do trust him not to physically hurt anyone.
