"Karl Rove Lied to the FBI "
Edited on Fri Oct-07-05 09:39 PM by Pirate Smile

Karl Rove Lied to the FBI
Jason Leopold

Looks like Karl Rove did break the law, the same federal law that got Martha Stewart sentenced to six months in prison.

It now appears that Rove, President Bush's chief of staff, may have lied to the FBI in October 2003 - a federal crime - when he was questioned by federal agents investigating who was responsible for leaking information about a covert CIA operative to the media.

During questioning by the FBI about his role in the Plame affair, Rove told federal agents that he only started sharing information about Plame with reporters and White House officials for the first time after conservative columnist Robert Novak identified her covert CIA status in his column on July 14, 2003. This is according to a report in the American Prospect about Rove's testimony in March 2004, a copy of which can be found here.

But Rove wasn't truthful with the FBI as evidenced by the disclosure of Time magazine reporter Matthew Cooper's emails, which reveal Rove as the source for Cooper's own July 2003 story identifying Plame as a CIA operative, and show that Rove spoke to Cooper nearly a week before Novak’s column was published and, according to previously published news reports, spoke to a half-dozen other reporters about Plame as early as June 2003.

"It was, KR said, Wilson's wife, who apparently works at the agency on WMD issues who authorized (Wilson's) trip," says Cooper's July 11, 2003 email to his editor and obtained by Newsweek. "Wilson's wife is Plame, then an undercover agent working as an analyst in the CIA's Directorate of Operations counter proliferation division."

Moreover, evidence suggests that President Bush was aware as early as October 2003 that Rove and I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby, Vice President Dick Cheney's chief of staff, were the sources who leaked Plame's undercover CIA status to reporters. After the president was briefed about the issue, he said publicly the source of the leak will never be found.

Furthermore, a few aides to Condoleezza Rice, then head of the National Security Council, may have played a part as well by being the first officials to learn about Plame’s role as a CIA operative and gave that information to Rove, Libby and other senior administration officials.

-snip-
Here's the fullest account yet of how the events leading up to the disclosure that Wilson's wife was a CIA operative unfolded, and how it all leads back to Rove. But first let's get to the real story behind the leak, the catalyst behind this issue.

36. can I hope this time there'll be no slaps on the wrist?
from JFK to Iran-Contra, they still are roaming the halls of power ... still in the White House and/or in Corporate Media

Donald Segretti, Rove's mentor, is alive and well, heading up GOP campaigns and practicing law in Orange County, CA.

I know Karl Rove has protégéd another generation of brownshirts, but something needs to serve as an eternal deterrent.

Hopefully, Mr. Fitzgerald sees the significance and scale of it all.
Hopefully, the fallout will affect the whole enabling syndicate ... including the Corporate Media. How will Leslie Blitzer and Bill Oh'Really spin treason?

Edited on Sat Oct-08-05 06:46 PM by corbett
How 'bout that parallel? Given the way the hard right is objecting to Miers, I've beginning to believe in the possibility that if Rove is convicted and Cheney has to resign, Republicans won't clamor too hard for * to stay in office.

Before Judy Miller left federal detention inside the Beltway, I never woulda conceived of this chance!

7. I Love This Article. Rove Committed MULTIPLE Crimes.
And he lied to the FBI in more than one way.

1) He didn't tell them about his talk with Matt Cooper where he divulged Plame's CIA status.

2) He didn't tell them about his conversation with Novak where he confirmed Plame's CIA status.

3) He didn't tell them about emails he sent regarding this matter BEFORE Novak's column.

And then after he started to explain some of the above, he lied again.

1) He claimed that Cooper called him on another matter and then brought up Plame. Lie.

2) He claimed heard about Plame from Novak or another reporter. Lie. (remember - his first claim was that he heard about Plame from Novak's column.)

The man has been caught in SO many lies.

32. I agree. Big, big difference.
Martha wasn't really trying to make money as much as she was to keep from losing it. It wasn't even a large amount (for her).

I've wondered what I'd do if I had stock and someone in the know told me it was about to take a dive. Insider trader is illegal but in a case like that (a small share holder) it goes against logic to keep the stock, knowing you'll lose money. Then perhaps you should go to stupid person's prison.

Martha surely lied. I don't care. Who did she hurt by the act she lied about?

Who did those going after Plame/Wilson hurt by the acts they lied about? A nation. They endangered who knows how many by revealing Brewster & Assoc, it takes a long time to build a network like that and it was such an important area. We went to war over fake WMD, these people were trying to investigate real ones.

I don't have to wonder what I'd do if I was p*ssed at someone who told the truth about my lies and I had the chance to try to negate him by revealing a top secret CIA cover network of my country.

That's horrifying. Not to much for Mrs. Wilson herself...but all who worked with and for her cover company, all the connections.
Those charged with leading us instead commit treason?

40. Sure it's about treason.
The reason behind the treason is maintaining the pursestrings on the MIC and doling out money to friends.

I maintain that it is still about money. It's the consequences of the actions that are vastly different.

http://www.cnn.com/2003/ALLPOLITICS/10/07/leak.main/

""I want to know the truth," the president told reporters after a meeting with his Cabinet. "I want to see to it that the truth prevails."

But, he added, "This is a town full of people who like to leak information. And I don't know if we're going to find out the 'senior administration official.' "

22. Also here it is part of the congressional record July 16 2004
President treated it rather cavalierly when he was asked about it. He
said: You know, there are leaks all over the White House. It is a big
administration. We may never find out who did it. And he smiled, as if
this was not a big deal. http://www.fas.org/irp/congress/2004_cr/s071604.html

I'm sure that K*rl, Sc*oter and the other sr. admin. officials requested background on Wilson from NSC or whatever other agencies are watching everyone. You know, "get me whatever you have about Wilson." There was probably a fair amount, since he was State Dept. and an ambassador.

Why Are These Men Laughing?
Ron Suskind
Esquire, January 2003.

***

Eventually, I met with Rove. I arrived at his office a few minutes early, just in time to witness the Rove Treatment, which, like LBJ’s famous browbeating style, is becoming legend but is seldom reported. Rove’s assistant, Susan Ralston, said he’d be just a minute. She’s very nice, witty and polite. Over her shoulder was a small back room where a few young men were toiling away. I squeezed into a chair near the open door to Rove’s modest chamber, my back against his doorframe.

Inside, Rove was talking to an aide about some political stratagem in some state that had gone awry and a political operative who had displeased him. I paid it no mind and reviewed a jotted list of questions I hoped to ask. But after a moment, it was like ignoring a tornado flinging parked cars. "We will fuck him. Do you hear me? We will fuck him. We will ruin him. Like no one has ever fucked him!" As a reporter, you get around—curse words, anger, passionate intensity are not notable events—but the ferocity, the bellicosity, the violent imputations were, well, shocking.

26. You mean the mistake of lying to the FBI? Because that was when his buddy
Ashcroft was overseeing and involved in the investigation. Guess Rove figured it was going to all be contained. But Ashcroft subsequently pretty much had to recuse himself from the investigation.

In addition to calls for Ashcroft to step aside from involvement in the investigation, with the players involved it was politically sensitive enough that it looked better to turn it over to a special prosecutor while going into an election year. Anyway, by the time Fitz was appointed Special Prosecutor Rover was already on the record with his story to the FBI. Oops.

And the fact that he was so highly vetted is the damning thing about it all--he KNEW better, and he did it anyway, for purely craven political purposes.
