what do you people think of columinst Gene Lyons?

i work as a newly hired copy editor at a small newspaper in ohio and have been running his columns a lot on my opinion page (we have a small well to draw from with our syndicate and he seems like one of the better ones).

i don't know a lot about his background. i like what he has to say so far, but what's his record like?
is he on the level?

1. Lyons always uses excellent sources. He's completely on the level.

He and Conason worked together alot, and I think Conason is one of the toughest, most accurate reporters in the business.

2. I've read his columns for years in Little Rock

I have found him to be factually accurate and insightful. He sees the "big picture" and tells it like it is.

5. Gene Lyons is a god

Along with Joe Conason, he wrote the book "The Hunting of the President," which detailed the vast right wing conspiracy that worked so hard to derail the Clinton administration. Lyons knows his stuff, gets his facts right even when the conventional wisdom folks like David Broder are busily trying to screw them up, and writes it like it is. Put him in the category with Conason, Molly Ivins and Paul Krugman. When the shameful history of the last 15-20 years of the Fourth Estate is written, Lyons will be one of the few who will come out as a tower of integrity.

like i said, he's been excellent these last few weeks since i took this job, but i didn't know much about him. i just wanted to be sure that i didn't have a peter beinhart or other DINO on my hands who i happened to catch on an uncharacteristicly leftist fluke.
