So, Bush DID authorize the torture at Abu Ghraib and others?
The Senate passed a $50B aid package for the war with the stipulation (an amendment added by John McCain) limiting torture of persons in U.S. custody. Shrubman says he will veto the bill with this to say in the CNN article link:

---snip---

Bush administration officials say the provision would limit the president's authority and flexibility, and the White House says advisers would recommend a veto of the entire spending bill if it includes provisions that would hurt efforts in the war on terror.

http://www.cnn.com/2005/POLITICS/10/07/congress.defense.ap/index.html

--snip--

Sounds like an admission to me.

1. Sounds like a proud boast to me.
"My torture chamber is bigger than yours! I'm now going to put another $50 billion into it! Nyaa Nyaa Nya Nya Nyaaaa!"

10. Ah, but they can't...if Bush wants his $50B, he has to sign the bill..
...which he has already promised to veto. 97-0...that's great. He'll get better treatment in the House.

18. I thought it was 91-8-1?
There were 8 Pukes endorsing torture. Whatever, it's pretty obviously veto-proof (at least in the Senate).

20. That's what I thought too, but then CNN reported that it went 97-0
Apparently, the Dems walked off the floor last night over some money Mary Landrieu of LA wanted put in for NOLA. When they returned for the official vote this morning, it passed 97-0 with the anti-torture amendment in place.

of course, CNN could be lying too. Maybe that original vote was just a straw poll of sorts?

It would appear the dirty 8 felt a bit of pressure.

34. Actually, I found it a few hours ago on another thread
They were all Repukes. Only remember a few: Sessions, Coburn, Inhofe, and someone from AK (not Murkowski).

Apparently, they have all changed heart on the 97-0 vote.

2. He authorized it when he said "The geneva Conventions do not apply'
He authorizes it when he sent leaders with histories of abuse to be in charge.
He authorized it when he sent mercenaries in to be in charge.

the types that vote for * have no problem with torture. They're all for it.
They are CERTAIN that every brown skinned person under detention by the * regime is a terrorist and guilty of 9/11 so torture them all, kill them all blah, blah , blah.

19. It looks good to Bill O'Reilly
He always argues the point that they aren't "prisoners of war", therefore excluded by the Geneva Agreements.

And O'Reilly is just a common working man. Hahahahahaha

I can't wait to hear his spin on this new development.

5. Are you kidding??
In my twisted little mind, I see him not just authorizing, but fairly well enjoying it. Remember, these are hateful, racist people. Think the guards and way-scary covert ops types enjoyed it, get a thrill of out it, take pictures, put them on the internet, use the prisoners to "blow off steam"? I'd say our president is at LEAST on that low level of emotional maturity and humanity. I'd think he's every bit as inclined to enjoy vicious gossip, mean-spirited activities, and get a real kick out of what we're doing to those...people. I image he doesn't actually think the word "people" though.

Yes, I think he okayed it, because there hasn't been the slightest indication he didn't.

Remember this is the man who said things would be easier if he were a dictator. Being able to torture people whenever you like is one of the hallmarks of dictatorship.

14. Begs two questions.
Is this statement tacit admission that the President approved the torture at Abu Grahib and Guantanamo?

Why does the President of the United States need the authority to torture prisoners? Why would anybody want the authority to mistreat other human beings?

Damnit! Somebody needs to ask these questions!

26. I have now contacted Senators and Congresspersons
Edited on Fri Oct-07-05 01:23 PM by longship
Feinstein (my senator)
Boxer (likewise)
Joe Baca (my congresscritter)
Nancy Pelosi (House minority leader)
Harry Reid (Senate minority leader)
Howard Dean (DNC chair)
John McCain (Senate sponsor)
John Kerry (Senate sponsor?)

Two questions I wanted answers to:

Why does the President of the United States need the authority and flexibility to torture prisoners?

Since there has been documented instances of torture on this administration's watch, and since the President seems to think he needs the authority to authorize it, on what occasions has the President used that authority?

on edit: emphasis added. Called McCain, too. And, Kerry, too. (I'm pissed off about this.)

If they had to make a law banning inhumane treatment then they obviously had laws or unwritten rules allowing it.

37. Gonzales gets promoted for finding a loophole
We throw away all the history of trying to make war as civil as possible by claiming that the war on terror isn't against an official state enemy that wears a uniform. Therefore, we can torture them, but they can't torture us because we wear uniforms. One of these days this chicken is going to come home to roost with the rest of them.

The preznit thinks the solution to everything is for him to have more power despite the fact that he has misused all the power he has.

Our long national nightmare of peace, prosperity and honor is finally over.
