The reporter's saying they were first told of a "potential" threat at 9 am, and it's odd that it's this late before they give a press conference. Hmm...


Another reporter pointing out that this is the middle of rush hour, and commuters don't know what they're supposed to do.

Oh, sh*t. The statement from the police commissioner won't be till 5:30. Earlier they were saying it would be within a few minutes.

They're at mobilizaton level 2 -- police officers working longer hours.


Wolf just announced Mayor Bloomberg will also be at the news conference.


Jean Meserve says officials at the Dept of Homeland Security aren't aware of any specific, credible threat in NYC.


This story is sounding crazier and crazier.


Just reporting that the FBI is saying there ISN'T ANY IMMINENT THREAT.


CNN now reporting they've heard from several sources that the threat was analyzed and deemed "not viable."


Press conference finally starting, at 5:39 Eastern time. Bloomberg speaking first. Says there's increased police presence, and there'll be more random searches. He said this is the first time they've "had a threat with this level of specificity." Asking that public remain vigilant, but he wants them to know he's taking the subway himself.

Police Commissioner Ray Kelly giving details of increased security, then introducing an assistant FBI director, who says the details of the threat are CLASSIFIED, and that "classified operations have partially disrupted this threat." So they won't explain, can't explain, what's going on. Uh-huh...

CNN's Jamie McIntyre now reporting there was a raid in Iraq related to this thread, people rounded up Wednesday night.

53. I saw more skepticism from the reporters today than usual. Meserve

especially. But then, she just got back from a trip to New Orleans where she was told that houses in the 9th Ward that apparently hadn't been searched for bodies and weren't marked HAD been searched and were unmarked only because the authorities had "run out of paint." If she'd believed that, I doubt she'd've done the story.

I'm glad to see the skepticism. I don't expect any of these journalists to call bullshit on the terror alerts yet...but I wouldn't be at all surprised if there'll be some investigating behind the scenes to see if they can find any facts to support the skepticism.
