EU wants shared control of the Internet

The US and the EU are headed for a showdown over future control of the Internet, if recent statements at a UN meeting are any indication. Noting that "the Internet is a global resource," EU spokesman Martin Selmayr called for a new cooperation model, AP reported. "The EU … is very firm on this position," he said.

Meanwhile, a senior U.S. official reiterated Thursday that the country wants to remain the Internet’s ultimate authority. The proposal calls for a new forum to address policy issues at a global level but not to perform oversight tasks, and also for a new cooperation model to manage global allocation of IP number blocks, procedures for changing the root file system and rules for the DNS (domain name system), among other things.

The US ambassador to the meeting, David Gross, said: ""We will not agree to the UN taking over the management of the Internet. Some countries want that. We think that’s unacceptable."

And why not? With the insanity going on in our gvt, aren't they right to want to distance themselves from US hegemony in this vital area?

1. BushCo is clearly terrified...
by the prospect of united EU - which would collectively be bigger and richer than this country. It's kind of hard to hold back the EU, China and India at the same time.

2. "the prospect of united EU" is a fantasy....
...China is far more a potential competitor in the future.

3. The internet is a global resource. Period.
No one country should be in control over it. The US is so afraid of the UN it's almost funny.

4. Honestly, whats to stop them?
I can see it now, an internationally incompatible internet, with lots of conflicting root servers. Won't that be grand?
