I was a paramedic, and I think our paramedics are the best hands down anywhere.

Prior to the NBC TV show "Emergency!" of the early '70s, most people had never heard of paramedics or EMS. If you had a medical emergency, the ambulance drivers would only pick you up and deliver you to the hospital (if you were lucky) or the morgue (if you weren't). As I recall, doctors, nurses, etc., at the time were not happy with non-credentialed people delivering any kind of non-first-aid-type medical care no matter what the circumstances.

The popularity of that TV show had people around the country DEMANDING that their local governments initiate the same programs in their communities. It's amazing what people will do when they think that someone else is getting something that they're not.

and I also wonder whether the regular people in China or North Korea are actually as brainwashed and propagandized as we are or if they just have to appear that way because they are under a more real physical threat for disagreement

also I am not familiar with them, but I cannot imagine any country, including Japan, having superior cheerleaders.

I agree with you re: highways. I've been saying for a long time that the only thing we get, despite paying income taxes that are largely comparable to Western Europe, is cheap gas (still cheap compared to Europe!), great roads, and a humongous military.

I have family in China and nobody in China really believes the government about anything... they just don't have a lot of alternate means of getting information and frankly don't really care - Chinese are a patient people. Their culture has been around for thousands of years, while the Communist government has been around for 50 or so... they just endure until the next form of government comes along - meet the new boss, same as the old boss - and try to work hard to make things better for their own children & grandchildren. They know their culture will likely survive longer than the Communist gov't there.
