Study: Most Will Be Fat Over the Long Haul >

This is rather alarming.

Study: Most Will Be Fat Over the Long Haul
By ALEX DOMINGUEZ, Associated Press Writer Mon Oct 3,11:09 PM ET

BALTIMORE - Just when we thought we couldn't get any fatter, a new study that followed Americans for three decades suggests that over the long haul, 9 out of 10 men and 7 out of 10 women will become overweight.

Even if you are one of the lucky few who made it to middle age without getting fat, don't congratulate yourself — keep watching that waistline.

Half of the men and women in the study who had made it well into adulthood without a weight problem ultimately became overweight. A third of those women and a quarter of the men became obese.

***

He and other researchers studied data gathered from 4,000 white adults over 30 years. Participants were between the ages of 30 and 59 at the start, and were examined every four years. By the end of the study, more than 1 in 3 had become obese.

1. Why is it alarming

It might be a manifestation of a slowing metabolism with age and serve to the advantage of an organism in some contexts.

Now of course there are degrees and consequences but life-long thinness may not be to each and every individuals advantage.

Not with standing that some studies on animals have tended to suggest that deliberate and consistent undefeeding can lengthen lifespan. Those organisms do not lead human lives and have human values.

6. It isn't alarming at all.
The population is getting older and bodily functions do slow down, and hence more people are "overweight," according to the food police.

The "fat crisis" is one of the biggest hoaxes out there, but it's important to keep people in a perpetual state of self-hate, for the diet, medical, fashion, and pharmaceutical industries depend on it.

What is really needed is an attitude change by those who hate others because they are different from themselves.

3. Somebody had to do a STUDY to find this out?

It's just common sense. People's metabolism slows as they age and they usually aren't as physically active as when they were younger.

5. thoughts
I don't think I have an axe to grind. I'm not a vegan or even a veggie, I've never counted a single carb, and I eat the run-of-the-mill stuff we find in supermarkets, mostly. (And have about 15 lbs to lose. Anyway -- )

There are cultures and populations around the world that do NOT have this weight gain thing going on. Could the typical American diet be the problem? I'm guessing it's at the heart of the matter.

The countries which don't have weight problems tend to be those in Third World countries where starvation is rampant.

Yeah, "fat" people are just slovenly, lack will power, and eat junk food.

What a load of crap, but unfortunately it's widely believed.

10. Also, how about these three... I Like Food.
Food tastes good to me, especially if it contains fat or high fructose corn syrup. Because I love rich, tasty food and despise the treadmill I am in a constant battle to maintain my weight where it is.

With our seditary lifestyles: commuting to work by car, bus or train; sitting on our rumps all day at a computer; getting home in time to cook dinner; get the kids a bath and to go to bed ourselves, there isn't a whole lot of leisure time to exercise (at least for me). I have been trying to do the little things, but a lifetime of eating salad and strenuous exercise is such a drastic lifestyle change for me that I often fail and have to start over when the pants get too tight.

11. You are probably right
I stopped drinking Pepsi a little over a week ago and am just drinking water. I have lost 7 pounds since then. I still have another 17 pounds to lose but I thought that was remarkable.

15. I could not agree with you more-- I am CONVINCED that is the culprit
About 8 months ago I stopped eating fast food, or imbibing anything with highfructose corn syrup in it.

I don't diet--I still eat baked goods (I bake them though with plain old sugar) and I have probably lost 20 pounds without doing anything but avoiding fast food and HFCS. I don't drink juice, or soda.

Ironically enough I didn't eat that much fast food to begin with,
but even the two times a week that I was eating it at lunch was apparently packing it on.

9. Missing some points here.....
there are many people who do not overeat who remain active and STILL get fat! Our culture, with the help of the FDA and FTC, not to mention the medical "industry" are the real problems. A very interesting read is NATURAL CURES "THEY" DON'T WANT YOU TO KNOW ABOUT by Kevin Trudeau....New York Times best seller. Even with all the controversy wrapped around the author, what he says is irrefutable. Stop and think about it--there are more diets, more diet foods, et. al and we're getting fatter. This read is an eye opener. The good news is there is an answer.

12. is that jailbird kevin trudeau
Edited on Tue Oct-04-05 09:38 AM by pitohui
i'll retain my skepticism

many ppl who are active, don't overeat, and still get fat are either older (slowing metabolism) or taking a medication that has the side effect of weight gain (can be anything from SSRIs to female hormones)

i don't see the answer, yes, ppl can stop taking their medicines and/or stop getting older, but i should think being fat is better than being dead

16. Retain your skepticism...
if you must....but I'm saying to think about it. Why do Japanese people and Europeans remain shapely? Don't their metabolisms slow as they grow older? We're all so indoctrinated to take medications and more medicine to counteract the side affects of the first. I think we need to look and be open minded about alternatives to drugs and surgery as being the best the medical field can offer especially in times when people are losing or can't afford medical insurance. We have better choices to make in the food we eat also. Corporate farming hasn't done us any favors nor has the FDA or FTC or pharmeceutial companies or fast food resturants...they just want our money.

17. It's too bad...
that Trudeau did so much damage to himself. Now, people who look at only that may see him as "crying wolf". I don't like his criminality but that doesn't mean he's wrong now. Just take a look at what he is saying....and he's not the only one.....not by far.
