Miers: it isn't ideology its about POWER
The "rubes" (the "values base") have *ideology* and must be catered to according to need to keep the votes coming in but...the Democrats have been so slandered and vilified over the past five years (in particular) that many so-called conservatives cannot imagine voting for a Democrat no matter what the Republican in question might have done. Rove has been very effective---the Swift Boat Liars were a prime example of that campaign. Whatever you think about Kerry's rate of response, the fact is that it was textbook process to energize a portion of the "values base" and create doubt in the middle group of "too busy to look at details" voters.

Bush* and his *real* constituency ("the haves and the have mores") have one goal: power. Keeping it and cashing in on it. Remember the Straussian neo-con agenda is for the strong to rule and the weak to obey. "Fundies" are useful in that they are easily directed en masse to the polls on "values" issues----the black and white world view is more easily attuned to memes and to "sound bite" news.

Harriet Miers is a long standing member of this Texas power elite whose personal loyalty is to Bush* and his class. That she has a public affiliation with one of our larger and more conservative "Christian" (as in non-denominational) churches will eventually asuage the fears of the "anti-choice/values" crowd and the understanding that her reliable vote on economic and political positions of interest to the cabal that Bush* truly cares about will get all of these people in line by the end of the week.

Freepers can cry and TV conservatives can wring their hankies in dismay but part of that is over a basic misogyny and the rest over the failure of some favored candidate to get the nod. The fact is that that FR denizens are part of the "ideology" base that must be appeased by "red meat" near election time and platitudes the rest of the time. What matters is the Cheney Republicans who run the military-industrial complex. And, enough court decisions go their way in the next few years and the "values base" won't much matter.

We can get "excited" by the "outrage" (I find it a bit suspicious that it was so fast out of the gate myself) on FR or on the TV but the fact is that Bush* and Rove care only about consolidating POWER. They have only one ideology: domination.

We are fools if we are fooled by it. Miers is a corporate vote on the SC as was Roberts. That matters more to these people than social issues---those are for inciting moral panics to get "blocks" to the polls.

1. That's what I say - It's about the FASCIST agenda, not ideology -
not Christian ideology or actual conservative ideology - it's about FASCISM.

2. Yep, and all day all I see here is....
the usual "maybe she's a stealth liberal!" or "maybe because FR is upset this is a *good* thing!!!" or, even after years of this shit: "this time I'm going to give the benefit of the doubt!" like something this big is going to be left to chance at this stage of the game. Not likely.

Let's face it: my So Baptist neighbors wanted Judge Moore of Alabama, the FR wanted the new chair of the Joint Chiefs appointed or both some combination of the two. The fact is that this is about POWER and corporate power at that which is...facism! Both groups are being *played* and I'm beginning to wonder if they ever will get that. I'm beginning to wonder about us given the Kos and DU insanity today.

I think that its a sign that they know they don't have to pretend to care. This woman is well known personally to Bush* and Rove--they know *exactly* what they are getting

4. Yeap. Drunk with money&power. Fundies are just enablers.
The fascist do not care about conflicts between the peasants or anything as small as a social issue when the object is to make labor secondary to the demands of capital.

I have held a good line on this for three or four years, partly because it states the obvious to me and partly as not to offend people. But to tell you the truth, "Those Christians will believe anything." They are just enablers.

5. So whatshername will vote for expansive presidential power
over congress, states and people for as long as a republican is president.

One of my four questions to Roberts was, "Do you agree with the opinion that there are 'inherent powers' in the executive branch? If so, can the president legally wield such power to disobey statutes and international acords, secretly or not?"

My guess is that whosits is a rock beats paper type of fascist wannabe, finding all sorts of implied and inherent unwritten power in the CinC.
