Subject: Republicans’ True Agenda: Ban Stem Cell Research in Wisconsin
Republicans' True Agenda: Ban Stem Cell Research in Wisconsin Wednesday, September 28, 2005 GOP Lawmakers Put Ideology Above the Hopes of Millions Suffering from Disease MADISON – Democratic Party of Wisconsin Chair Joe Wineke released the following statement today regarding an expected vote by the Republican-controlled State Senate to approve a bill that would undermine stem cell research in Wisconsin and handcuff the hands of scientists searching for cures to some of the world's deadliest diseases: "Republicans in the Legislature have decided to put ideology above the hopes of millions of Americans suffering from debilitating diseases who are praying science can find a cure for them. By approving a bill that would undercut stem cell research in Wisconsin, Republicans will send a message to scientists around the world that Wisconsin's door is no longer open to this groundbreaking medical research. "Republicans are trying their best to ban stem cell research in Wisconsin by disguising this bill as a `ban' on human cloning. Of course, Democrats – like all Americans – oppose human cloning, and human cloning is not permitted in the United States. But the bill Republicans will approve today isn't about banning human cloning; it's about stopping scientists from doing legitimate medical research. "Just this week, Governor Doyle announced $2 million in funding to a Madison-based firm that is using stem cell research to screen for drugs for heart patients. The company – Cellular Dynamics International – is founded by Dr. Jamie Thomson, the UW-Madison researcher who first pioneered stem cell research. And just a week ago, UW-Madison was named the top research university in the nation. "Instead of trying to tie the hands of our scientists, Republicans should work with Governor Doyle to further stem cell research in Wisconsin and ensure the growth of more companies like Dr. Thomson's. Instead of trying to chill pioneering research at the top research university in the country, Republicans should work with Democrats to ensure that Wisconsin continues its leadership in creating the jobs of the future. "Yet Republicans continue to push their radical agenda, without regard to the views of the vast majority of Wisconsin citizens who support stem cell research and its potential to cure deadly diseases from Parkinson's to multiple sclerosis to diabetes. "Fortunately, Wisconsin has a Governor who understands the tremendous potential of stem cell research to save lives and has vowed to veto any legislation that would restrict the ability of our scientists to do their jobs."
