A loyal member of his inner circle - it's almost like he's rigging the system, like he's worried about something.

87. I know. No one asks Henry Kissinger's suit size.
Except for rather bitchy surveys of Capitol Hill staffers (in which Paul Wellstone and Ron Dellums were, respectively, derided and lauded for their manner of dress), men in public life get away with whatever appearance.

Okay, Jon Stewart DID make fun of John Bolton's mustache. But that's the exception.

How the woman looks is so beneath comment!

There's so much in this announcement that's more important that the woman's appearance is the least of our worries.

19. I never said that was okay and frequently ask that we stay on substance.
However, there are differences between talking about a person's eye make-up, wrinkles, and weight and talking about a particular expression that indicates mood or temperment.

Most of the comments about Bush's appearance are regarding his expression - an indication of his mind and temperment.

Criticizing a person's appearance as "unsexy" or "ugly" is inappropriate for a supposedly progressive person whether it's Bush, Cheney, Condi or Karen Hughes.

Saying that Condi's snarl makes her look particularly hostile today or that the boots she's chosen to wear have an overt militaristic character is not exactly the same thing as saying, "Man, her ass sure is big!"

Edited on Mon Oct-03-05 09:15 AM by Stephanie

She's caked it on like a desperate teenager. Note that my opening post was not about her appearance. I questioned her being a "loyal" member of the "inner circle." However, I'm tired of nannies telling us what we are allowed to say, especially if the subject is a woman. We often speculate about Bush's red face (drunk), his jaw grinding (coke jaw), his blemishes and injuries (drunk). And yet it's hands off the women. Laura Bush is a sacred cow around here. Don't say mean things about Laura! When she has done more to put the Chimp in office and smooth over his failings than ANYONE ELSE. When you join the criminal Bush Family you are FAIR GAME. I'm tired of the post policing.

Carte blanche!

I don't think you know what you're talking about, but you should consider that many of us who left the US after the 2004 elections did so in part because the left offers no real alternative.

It's bad enough to have the worst government in the world, but when the "opposition" is as bad as the people in power, there is no point.

The opposition is as bad as the people in power because the supporters of the opposition are as bad also. You expect nothing, so you're manipulated and get nothing.

You eye surgery comment only serves as another example of the truth that DU can out freep the freepers.

71. Keep me out of your "We"
I have never contributed to discussions about anyone's personal appearance, coke jaw, drinking, etc.

I wonder what the point is regarding the eyeliner. What character trait does (in your mind) excessive eyeliner indicate? What bearing does that trait have on her qualifications for the court?

It's not about the gender of the person. I rejected the inane "observations" about Howard Dean having no neck, the pointless criticisms about John Kerry's elongated face, and the dismissal of John Edwards' intellect due to his "blow-dried" sex appeal.

Many people on this board NEED a fucking nanny because they act like children.

Since your first post wasn't about being a superficial image Nazi, I wasn't talking about you in the first place.

Honestly how do you get off telling an entire board of Democrats what they are and are not allowed to say? If you don't like the discussion you are welcome to sit it out, but don't expect 70,000 posters to obey your rules.

As to the relevance of her eyeliner, it reveals to me that she is self-deluded and clueless. She is making herself up like Britney Spears on the day her SC nomination is announced. I find it reveals her immaturity.

Look, if you don't get it, that's okay with me. I'm not telling you what you're allowed to post here. But I will post whatever I like, within the DU rules. To each their own.

There's no free speech issue here, and you know it.

You and the other sweet, loving individuals who think calling a person a "sea hag" is appropriate are perfectly free to do so. There's absolutely nothing stoping you from doing the wrong thing except your own conscience.

Telling you that you shouldn't is not telling you that you can't. You always retain the right to be wrong.

It typifies exactly why the left in the US always loses so miserably. Many apparently can't begin to conceive what it actually means to have your speech regulated. The new Supreme Court should take care of that.

31. Know what?
I got drafted and FOUGHT for my country in 1971, and what for? FOR ME TO HAVE FREEDOM OF SPEECH - so guess what?

I'll call a saddlebag a saddlebag if I want to, and YOU have the freedom to IGNORE these comments.

Unless you are running for Jello Sheriff (Bill Cosby anyone?) or have doves that come to take your feces away..

My 500 lb pal was FAT and we made no bones about it, FAT, it means just what it says, and this woman is what I would call "coyote ugly" - one of my ugly female friends in Alaska used to laugh and say she had Three Arms on her wall as trophies of the men who went home drunk with her, woke up with their arms under her head on the pillow and chewed them off at the elbow to GET AWAY..

Even tho she was ugly she was a great pal, or you can do what Eddie Murphy used to say, "Hey, them ugly people are lonely, and they need sex as bad as you do, next time you see and ugly person, go up to them and say 'Dammit, Let's have SEX!' - Do them a favor.."

Or as one black (black! did I offend someone?) comedian said once, "Marry you an Ugly woman, she'll never cheat on you, and if you go out and get drunk, when you come home, she starts lookin' pretty Good.."

Be as PC as you want, be a being of Light, but don't tell other people that they can't INSULT NAZIS, PLEASE..

Holding our tongues is how these bastards get into office and KILL EVERYONE.

56. And don't forget newspaper photographers
are notorious for taking pictures of public figures when they look the most unflattering.

THOSE are the pictures that make it in newspapers and online, not the pictures which make the public figures look better.

I've seen a quite a few public figures in person, and without exception they look MUCH better in person than they do in pictures or even on television.

Only models and actors, who have tons and tons of makeup, cosmetic surgery, and the like, actually photograph better than they look in real life.

She'll be easier to take on because she's an ugly woman, compared to Roberts, who was a generally, descent looking man.

Looks play a big part in people's perceptions.

Ugly = bad

In the minds of the American people, she'll be easier to be made into a bad person and someone not worthy of nomination if we pound hard enough. The fact that she looks like a zombie helps a lot in this regard.

Does that make her shrubs "personal" lawyer? I think there are a few obscure differences, but the effect is the same.

BTW, all this "playing nice" stuff did not work out too well for us during the last election cycle. A record number of volunteers, a record amount of money, and a record loss of power due to a crappy "but nice" campaign strategy. Maybe it IS time to rough up the opposition a little.

30. It's not whather he wants a woman or not
but if the Dems can make a girl cry on the stand, they're gonna be slaughtered by the media.

Yeah, it's shallow and dripping with mysogyny , but that's what I think is going to happen.

38. I know. I haven't seen eyeliner like that since
the seventh grade in the late '70s -- that's what the stoner girls wore, thick black eyeliner all the way around the eyes.

35. I don't like Bush's "stealth nominee" tactics.
I know we've had Supreme Court Justices without experience as judges before, but he just DID this same thing with Roberts. I think leaving everyone in the dark on a candidate's position on key legal questions is rather disrespectful of the process.

37. I don't like to criticize people's looks, but I
can criticize her experience which is null. At least 1 year's experience like Clarence Thomas or something. Come on, she had never been a judge in her life....

51. Ugly?
Come on folks, this woman is completely average looking. You'd never notice anything unusual about her if you saw her in the mall on a Saturday morning. She doesn't even have "fanatical" eyes. She looks like your average businesswoman.

Must be something more to pick at than her looks, at least I hope so, because they aren't that bad for her age.

62. "a pit bull in size 6 shoes" - according to Bush*
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2005/06/20/AR2005062001161.html

I don't like pit bulls. I really don't.

3 of them attacked a boy getting off a school bus last week near here.

Last month one killed an old man who had been sitting on his porch in the next county over.

Republicans sure seem to like them and what they represent. That they attack (pre-emptively) and don't let go - don't give up?

64. it seems like those around bush lack anything behind their eyes...
maybe it is just me, but I get the distinct impression they are soulless...

Look at bush's eyes in the first pic, it is as though there is NOTHING behind them! Look into her eyes, and the same impression is apparent. It is as if they are chosen simply because of the lack of a soul.
