WBZCBSTV Boston reporting this morning that 1/3 of necessary # of signatur
obtained after "Signature gathering Sunday"; petition to get amendment banning gay marriage onto ballot in MA.

Needed 65,000 signatures got 1/3 of that. Catholic churches in Boston Archdiosese set up tables outside Catholic churches to get parishioners to sign petition

This was heavily promoted last week in local papers. IMHO, a piss poor showing (good)- the church's power is waning if what WBZ reports is true

Signatures need to be in by Dec to Sec. of State's office

1. Those churches should have their tax exempt status yanked.

2. What is the state going to do with all that new source of tax money, since
the churches keep acting like PAC's.

3. According to the Boston Globe, they are just getting started.
http://www.boston.com/news/specials/gay_marriage/articles/2005/10/03/petition_bid_to_ban_gay_marriage_said_to_gain/

This was the first weekend of active campaigning and
they have seven weeks to go. They are well on pace.

4. I may be wrong, but that will be the biggest day for them -
the same people will be at Mass next week and the week after AND THEY WOULD HAVE ALREADY SIGNED IT

Every signature from now on will be harder to get. They still have to get 2/3 of remaining number (about 40,000 AND they have to be verified - this is not as easy as it sounds)
