Rosa Parks didn't spontaneously decide not to give up her seat. She was a volunteer secretary for the local NAACP and was picked to be the test case in a challenge to the back-of-the-bus rule. They wanted someone who could be counted on not to lose her temper and to hold up under press coverage and scrutiny. It takes a village to start a bus boycott.
