Slap Corporate Media Upside the Head - Excellent Campaign
Disgusted by coverage of the Runaway Bride, Tom Cruise, and Michael Jackson masquerading as 'news' - while REAL news is ignored?

American Progress is sponsoring an email campaign to force corporate, mainstream media to cover the genocide in Darfur. Watch the video and then send emails to FOX, MSNBC, ABC, CBS to tell them to report the news. Be A Witness Video

1. I'm going to bump this up. Darfur is one subject. There are many.
The question is, how are we going to hold corporate media accountable? This is a good campaign but this perspective needs to be taken much further, IMO.

2. Concur! which is why I ...
Started this thread about the media campaign associated with the movie Good Night, and Good Luck.

I think that if we can create enough buzz about that campaign, we just might be able to make some headway.

7. I looked at the 'Good Night & Good Luck' Be The Media page --
How is it distinguished from Indymedia? or other websites at which people post links to news stories that might otherwise be overlooked and report their own experiences?

I am friendly toward the idea, just wondering...

11. My hope is that it will leverage
The buzz from the film.

My point is that we can help create a buzz about the film, and thus, push the very same issues being reported on by the myriad of other similar sites, which remain obscured.

In other words, I hope the film will be big enough to have coat-tails for under-reported issues to see the light of day.

In no way do I mean to detract from indymedia or anyone else doing their level best to get the stories before the public. Maybe they can use it also?

15. But only if we can make the connection...
That the old school of journalism is alive in the indy scene. Otherwise, you can build it, but they won't come.

Dig?

3. Agreed - and breaking through the
seemingly unbreakable glass separating the media and the people will require throwing thousands and thousands of rocks.

I think the campaign is excellent because it really emphasizes the extent to which the media exists to MAKE MONEY - they are addicted to running 'pop' news to make money, which then yields a dumbed down public, which...

4. I suggested here at DU two years ago that we needed to do four things:
Edited on Sun Oct-02-05 11:01 AM by Beam Me Up
1: We need to orgnize groups of people in local communities to monitor their local news broadcasts. Specifically, keeping track of what they do cover and what they do not.

2: These groups need to publish papers which will expose the distortions of local news.

3: Petitions need to be brought to the attention of the management of these news outlets and their primary sponsors (usually only a handful).

4: Finally, if all else fales to get results, actual picketing should occur.

5. The local papers get their 'news' from the AP wire --
The local TV stations get their 'news' from the national desk. Maybe they could be seeking news from international press sources - like AFP. Still, we need to work to change the nationals, as well as the locals.

I think your ideas are good and are part of the solution - which we have to work from many angles -- by working to change the locals and nationals, by abandoning the corporate media for alternative sources (and letting them know why)...

6. You are right but we still have to begin somewhere. I think doing this
on a local level is a good way to start, not that it has to be limited to the local level. If we can get a petition and a dozen demonstrators (or more!) that would have an impact that would go up the chain.

I'm also just replying to your post to give this thread a well deserved bump. :hi:
