Also on the agenda, the unveiling of Belfast's first public UriLift toilet, a stainless steel urinal that rises hydraulically out of the ground at night to serve male revelers.

3. Singapore has a bit of an obsession with public toilets.

Like Britain and the Chinese city of Beijing, they have a grading standard and system for their public toilets, and the ratings are posted. (Singapore's recent Happy Toilet, Healthy People campaign).

On the statutory side, there are fines for not flushing a public toilet. Singapore, where the sale of chewing gum is illegal and people are fined for spitting, is famous for its unique approach to personal standards. (Theoretially, you can be fined for spitting in the New York City subway system, but I've never seen it happen.)

As to Britain, I was very happy when traveling alone in London, to find so many visible, safe and generally clean public toilets. :)
