Church, state vie over casinos

By GEOFF PENDER

capitalbureau@aol.com

JACKSON - Rep. Jim Simpson of Pass Christian couldn't believe the e-mails he received from some self-proclaimed Christians this week attempting to lobby against casinos rebuilding after Hurricane Katrina.

"I've gotten more than half a dozen from people who said, 'I prayed for the destruction of Katrina. This is God's wrath,'" said Simpson. "I got so mad I wanted to scream at them. But I didn't respond. Not yet."

Many of Simpson's constituents died in Katrina. He lost his home and his business and pretty much everything he owns.

"I'm going to get together a list of all the obituaries," Simpson said, "and send them in my response to them. I'm going to send that list and ask, 'OK, was this part of your prayers? Did you want this to happen?'

3. While I don't agree with his constituents
Rebuilding casinos may not be that good an idea - I saw somewhere where some people think that the destruction of wetlands to allow floating casinos to manuever the Mississippi better could have been a factor in Katrina's level of damage as they've acted as a natural sponge that absorbed a lot of rain from past hurricanes.

5. That's not even related to the issue in Mississippi
These casinos were floating on barges moored along the Gulf beach. There were no wetlands involved, this is a stretch of sand beach 26 miles long along a seawall. And they are trying to rebuild these casinos on land. They have nothing to do with the Louisiana wetlands.

I'm not even sure what you're talking about, actually. The two types of casinos in New Orleans are riverboat casinos--and they are far smaller than the ocean liners which travel up the Mississippi--and land based casinos like Harrah's on Canal Street.

Maybe some of the Lake Charles casinos affect the wetlands around Lake Charles, since they are floating on a lake, but those are miles inland from the coast.

9. Then these people are provocateurs and traitors
I consider any American who prays for the devastation of our country or the deaths of our citizens to be a traitor to to this nation.

Especially those who wait and pray for the imaginary Rapture, who drool over visions of Americans suffering and dying in what they call Tribulation. They are homegrown terrorists, no better than al Queda.
