A friend of a friend is working with relief efforts in NOLA, said they had gone through first 10,000 body bags already. Not sure how reliable.

6. From DU today
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=102x1814203

They are recovering very, very slowly. Bodies are not counted until they are cataloged. They can do at most 140 of those a day. They tried to deny access to the news media entirely but they still can disappear a lot of bodies and rumor has it they need to keep the body count under 3000 for the Feds purposes.

Since it still looks like there are at least 10,000 dead it is a problem. Somebody here on DU snagged mailing lists and some other census information prior to the hurricane to try to coordinate this when it eventually hits the fan. Missing lists online were consolidated but there is no way to know if people are found and the listing is not erased on those. People could really officially report family not neighbors and friends so how it shakes out is really very up in the air. This is a very low priority on the Feds level and the local and state are scrambling to help the living and keep the vultures and carpet baggers from looting even more.

It has to be driven by the people of NOLA and they are being shuffled around and stymied. Rita slowed everything again.
