You and I know for sure that jobless claims could not possibly have
in the face of all those corporate layoffs, airline cuts, Katrina, Rita and the general economy. Where are these people getting this information and why is the media allowing it to be spun on a daily basis?

1. Could not possibly have what?
And more to the point, dismissing hard data based on anecdotal evidence isn't usually a good idea (although occasionally gratifying). If you have a specific problem with the methodology, that would be more relevent.

Personally I wouldn't be surprised if there wasn't a bit of a lag in the Hurricane victims claiming joblessness. The numbers might look ok for a month or two and then jump significantly.
