1. Yes, parts of the city have been flooding since yesterday.
The levees were breached again in a couple places. I gather it's mostly the 9th Ward and low-lying areas. Didn't hear a percentage of the city. They are sandbagging the breached levee and starting to pump the water out again.

4. Thanks. I have been focused on Rita because of friends that I have
in Texas, but I haven't heard much about New Orleans.

In this Crisis a minute world we live in, it is hard to keep up. :)

5. Good information seems hard to come by.
There was at least overtopping, and probably some breaching, on both sides of the Industrial Canal, which spilled more water into low parts of the 9th ward, as well as St. Bernard's Parish. Water as deep as 8 feet has been admitted by the Army Corps of Engineers. The ACOE is now dropping the big sandbags in an attempt to shore up the banks of the canal.

The London Street Canal has been leaking, and there are reports of 6-8 inches of water in parts of downtown.

The 17th St. Canal looks okay.

The storm surge has reflooded parts of St. Tammany Parish north of Lake Ponchartrain, which remains about 6 feet above normal.

There is also flooding from surge and winds reaching into lower Jefferson and St. Charles Parishes, and levees in those areas may be overtopped. These levees include the Harvey Street Canal levees that run south from the Mississippi River.

There are also reports of some other levee to the west breaking or being overtopped.

It is not as bad as it was with Katrina, by any means, inside the city, but the surge, wind and rain are definitely causing problems in the NOLA metro area as well as the more serious problems to the west and northwest.

6. Ponchartrain is six foot over normal and rising due to Rita
They are warning people along the lake in Slidell that the water may rise even more. Some areas of New Orleans have always flooded in heavy rains, even without levee damage, and the rivers upstream are flooding, too. With the flooding from Rita, and the high water in the swamps and bayous to the west, the water is slower to drain, and it's filling Ponchartrain.

This could be a disaster that unfolds in the next couple of days, as the rain from this storm makes its way to the sea.

Oh yeah, and it was major story yesterday that the Industrial Canal levee broke again. There is a smaller canal that connects the Industrial Canal just before the river, and because of the way the water flows out of this smaller canal it may be sending a wash of water over the top of the levees.

They need floodgates on all these smaller canals. That would have stopped the 17th street canal from breaking after Katrina.

Here's a good site for NO news, and right now they have a cool picture or cows on the front page.

7. I heard that in addition to the 9th ward flooding again
Some other areas of NO that were not flooded from Katrina are now flooded from Rita.

Anyone have any confirmation on that?
