hurricane? Are you okay? Your family? Home?

142. I am doing fine - sitting out this storm in Saucier, MS which is

about 30 miles north of my place (my sister's house). I didn't want to risk sitting in my FEMA trailer on my lot, so I am up here, enjoying the A/C, internet and a wonderful spaghetti dinner. My trailer doesn't have power to it yet and who wants to push their luck with high gusts and tides in a travel trailer?

I lost my home (now slab & rubble), my vehicle and almost all but the shirt on my back. The house we were in was 2 miles inland and at 14 foot elevation but the tidal surge was too much and the water rose 9 feet in the house (gutting the 1st floor). My brother lost his house, my sister lost her 1st floor, my other brother had 3 feet of water in his house. I am trying to get back on my feet, it will take time but I'll get there.

Where are you for Rita? I hope all of yours are safe and dry (and not suffering in some evac traffic somewhere).

I remember you as a dear DU friend during the "election" and especially right after. I know that some citizens have been generous to Katrina victims, have you received any such generosity? Did you feel abandoned by the Federal Government? How long did you wait for the trailer? How big is the trailer? Do you have a large family living in it? Twenty questions eh. Do you need anything in particular? Anything you miss especially or would like to have right now?

As for me in Rita, we did not evacuate for several reasons. We are a one income family (I haven't been able to find work for like 2+ years thanks to this administration and its booming economy) so not much extra money to go away on. My husband had to work until Thursday and by then all the freeways were backed up for like 100 miles in every direction. So far, it hasn't been much of anything here. Our neighbors lost one old large tree which is sad and kind of strange since the winds were only like 20-30 mph. Nothing was damaged but the tree. I will miss the tree. We'll see what happens. I wish it would come here instead of hitting Louisiana again.
