Nigerians storm US oil platform and capture it - going for more

http://tvnz.co.nz/view/page/411319/613370

More than 100 armed militants on Thursday stormed a US-operated oil platform in Nigeria, the world's eighth largest exporter, in response to the arrest of a militia leader.

Armed with assault rifles, fighters in speed boats invaded the Idama platform operated by Chevron in the southern Niger Delta, while in the capital a judge ordered Mujahid Dokubo-Asari to be held in jail for two weeks pending treason charges.

Oil prices are at near record highs due to hurricane damage in southern United States, and any disruption to exports of high quality crude from Nigeria, its fifth-largest supplier, would stretch supplies further.

2. That's not bad, it'll take you about an hour and a half
to start off with, and then you'll probably get faster as you get more fit. Try doing "one-ways" -- take your car to work, leave it there, bike home, then bike back the next AM.

5. that's a thought..
My first challenge is finding a route.... which is not as simple as it sounds. The main road, sixth avenue is a highway with no bike access and there isn't an obvious parallel road that goes the extent without going considerably out of my way. There is a series of bke paths that would go out that far, but I'd be talking 25 miles each way since they take you way out of the way.

7. Yeah, route planning is hard.
Is there a drive / bike combo that would take you part of the way, maybe in conjunction with someone else?

Also, thinking long-term, are there some cycling activists in your area that you could network with? Maybe with some strategic pressure on your city planning system you could get additional bike routes or something.

3. Get a recumbent, it rides easier than a "wedgie" - they look
strange, but ride smoothly. I have a long wheel base, 20" rear wheel, 16" front and go up inclines and overpasses with no strain.

10. Hemp is a renewable source of fuel, however, until exxon decides to grow
and sell hemp, you can count that one out. exxon and the texas white-boy petroleum mafia will first suck all of the petrocarbons out of the ground and the dollars out of Americans pockets. Priorities, ya know...

exxon, just like a virus, only deadlier.

11. I was under the impression that chevron was a world company and not US.
It was one of the first to move it's offices off shore for tax evasion purposes.
