I really disliked Beaumont when I was there in the 1970s, and
have never had a good word to say about the place since then.

But now that it seems to be directly in Rita's path, I wish the city the best, and I do genuinely hope it doesn't get hit too hard by the storm.

No town deserves that kind of damage. I'm pulling for you, Beaumont!

1. Same here!
Beaumont/ Port Arthur was always considered a necessary evil to the rest of us Texans. (The pollution and refinery imagery weren't included in tourism brochures.)

Now, I'm sorry I ever felt that way.

Thanks for posting!

2. I feel your pain
I was unfortunate enough to live there in the early 80's for about a year or so. The stench from the refineries was horrible and hung in the air like a cloud. It was enough to make you sick.
The nicknames "Blowmont" and "Boremont" were familiar meme's with folks that I knew.
However...I did have occasion to visit again mid to late 90's, and the town really had grown some and didn't look all too bad that time around.
There is redemption, possibly.
I am with you--hoping good thoughts and remembering manyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy nights spent at The Palace, Copperfield's and Get Down Brown's. Although Rock's out on Fannett Road was a favorite of folks at work for an after work brew. Of course-I was 18-19 at the time and that was all I really cared about.:)
Here's to Beaumont!:toast:

4. Hey, at least you can remember the details...
The band and I played there half a dozen times, and I'll be damned if I can remember the names of the places; thirty years and four concussions can do a job on your memory....wait a minute, what was it that we were talking about?

3. I have a friend from Beaumont
Her family left that city before dawn yesterday, heading to the Hill Country. They got the word several hours later that friends of their's had tried to leave right before lunchtime and were forced to turn around by police who told them, "It's too late, now." :wtf: Rita is projected to hit on Saturday! This was Thursday! Two days ahead of time is too late?!

BTW, my friend's family finally made it here. It took them until after midnight to make the trip. It's usually about a five hour journey and took an extra 13 hours or so. Unreal.
