In case anyone doesn't know this. When you are trying to get out
of the way of a hurricane you can also go South. I don't know where are those traffic jams are heading out of the east coast of Texas but if it were me I'd head straight or south west.

The thing is go in the opposite direction of the hurricane. You don't even have to get away from the shore in a lot of cases. Just head in the direction that the hurricane isn't.

1. That's a good point...
Head down to Brownsville or spend a few wild days in Matamoros. :)

4. I LOVE Mexico! I would consider a hurricane to be a great excuse
to hang out for awhile (all the TX hotels are booked anyway). Fish tacos and cerveza....!

5. Hurricane Elena, 1985
I was at Mississippi State and wanted to visit my parents and girlfriend in Gulfport, but there was a Category 3 hurricane heading to the region. So I watched Hurricane Elena until it had gone on shore in Florida, somewhere east of Pensacola, and I left Starkville for the three hour drive home. By the time I got to Gulfport, Elena had backed off the shore, and traveled along the coast line half on and half off the beach, strafing the entire coast from Pensacola to Gulfport.

I ate at a Pizza Inn that night with my girlfriend and family, then went back to my parents' house to watche the storm roll into Gulfport, where it finally commited to going ashore.

I personally wouldn't recommend going south. These hurricanes aren't as predictable as the models make them sound. You might wind up evacuating into its path.
