Have u noticed the subtle "scared" or "be careful" posts re DC protest
this weeekend?

Some aren't even subtle, some may be sincere, but I believe some are meant to discourage attendance and to intimidate. Just sayin'

Anyone agree?

1. It seems most are sincere concern.
I'm going, I'm not worried, but I'm keeping my eyes open.

2. I believe they are sincere.....
my thoughts are that the neocons are feeling backed into a corner and that is when they are most dangerous...so I have been telling my friends who are going to be careful....be alert. I don't trust W and his neocons one iota...

8. that's where I think we might be safer than ever before
Bushco certainly doesn't need more bad press and if he lets another Kent State happen any support he does have left will run for the hills.

3. I've noticed, and had someone try to talk me out of bringing my
10 yr. old son. If he doesn't go with me I can't go as my husband has to be the band parent with the older 2 at a ballgame tomorrow night. They couldn't find a flight after the game to get them there in time for the march on Sat. so the youngest 1 and I will be on a bus with some locals and some folks from AL.

But yeah, I've noticed.

13. Thanks for your determination, validation and most importantly for your
fine example of responsible progressive citizenship. This will be a great lifetime experience for your 10 year old son. Do not worry- there is strength in numbers and all will go well!

21. Thanks.
Mostly all we receive around here is scorn. I hope that my son feels the energy of people trying to make a change in society and that he takes it with him. It can be tiresome trying to fight the good fight in the midst of so many braindead repubs.

19. Mine too...and now I'm wondering if maybe we're partly reacting
to some of those posts. I've been uneasy about the flying part since almost the beginning but it's been getting worse the last few days. Maybe we've been reading too many of the doom and gloom posts. Logically, I don't see any reason to be scared, which is why I wanted some feedback. I think I've just made myself a little paranoid imagining the very worst that could happen in every situation since Katrina. One person on my thread wrote something about "overload" and I think that's what a lot of us are experiencing.

7. What, you think?
Edited on Thu Sep-22-05 09:53 PM by The Traveler
Forgive my :sarcasm:

I think you are right on target, bud. Flip side of that coin ... remembering the 60s, repression of dissent can get pretty brutal in this country. Which, of course, just makes it that much more important that we stand.

On edit: There is genuine concern out there, too. But I do think that some of these guys are fearmongers with purposes divergent from our own. Apologies to all the well meaning folk who may have taken offense. Guess I'm just in the mood to squish a freeptroll or something.

18. Forgiven; in fact it is quite welcome. I appreciate the validation too.
Your edited comments are well said. I too know that there is genuine concern but as you attest there is a element of psy ops out there too. It is actually kinda of fun to try and discern between the two.

Some seem quite subtle and others are really obvious. There is one in particular which I would love to "out" but I ironically enough could be banned for such an accusation.

So to all reading this thread lets be cogniscant of such tactics and know that they will be gone real soon since most people going are leaving in the morning anyway.

12. My observation too!
Hmmm. maybe it would be worth a search on these posts to see the post counts of the originators to see if they are "plants" set on discouraging people from going.

Of course DU is just a handful of people which probably accounts for about 1% of the protestors (2% to be generous)and if some decided not to go because of one of those posts, I don't think it would affect the total turnout-assuming word has spread wide and far about the protest.

16. I kinda think its justified concern
not that I think anything is going to happen, but it can be scary to be in such a huge crowd...you never know who might show up, and belligerent counter-protesters could spark something. Most of the posts I've seen are just giving advice on how to react in possible situations...and to me that makes sense...many, many groups have done protest training before large events.

17. My concern is very sincere
The BFEE rats are feeling increasingly trapped. They are at their most dangerous when they are cornered and that's saying alot even with these amoral fascist pig-fuckers. Tienanmen Square raise any memories? I don't want to lose DU friends.

20. I can see being worried about having some heads busted but
raising it to Tienanmen Square level concern is just ridiculous. Everyone just has to watch their P's and Q's and watch out for provocateurs. I'm 100% positive that no one will be crushed by a tank on saturday.

22. The comparison was for dramatic effect
but I am sad to say that I would not be surprised if there are covert plans to provoke a confrontation. And if that happens, people will die and it will be on purpose.

There are special forces troops and mercs in DC as we speak. The info has been posted on some other DU threads.

23. If you get a chance while down there.

If one is offered, attend a protester training session. There are some very experienced activists who have been through marches both peaceful and not-so-peaceful and you should definitely try and learn from them.
