To Sept 24 protesters!
Hello all...

The last time there was a massive protest in downtown DC, it was for the World Bank meetings. The protests were justified and necessary, but some individuals left such a mess I was ashamed.

If you are coming into town next weekend, please remember that there are people who will remain after you have gone. Trash, living refuse, and even cigarette butts have to be cleaned up by the people who are still here after you are gone.

If you all can do me a favor next weekend - protest well, and respect those of us who live in town. Your object of protest doesn't live in the area you are protesting in. We do.

Thanks for the cooperation.

1. Right, let's show them we are the "good guys."
It's Pukes who drive giant SUVs, drop cigarette butts, and fart in public. ;-)

3. Maybe this is one of those sacrifices that everyone talks about
When large numbers of people gather, they tend to leave a mess. I lived in DC for 23 years, and never found this to be an issue. Liberals are more conscientious than most, so I'm sure the mess won't be nearly as bad as it could be. I'm sure you can live with it for a couple of days in exchange for even the possibility that this protest can save lives.

4. I've been here fifteen years.....
And you've obviously never had to clean up a mess. If you had, you would at least know. I've picked up trash after every protest since 1991.

It wears on you after a time...

5. Great post
It never hurts to remind people to leave a place cleaner than when they arrived. At least those were the rules I was raised with. I will try to do my part.

10. I lived on "The Hill" for 5 years
and have cleaned up a lot of trash, and not just after protests. I chalked it up to the cost of living in the city.

7. Any estimations on how big the demonstrations will be?
I'm hoping to take advantge of the publicity of this demonstration to send an info pack to the media here in France. The goal is to show the French media how Bush manipulated public opinion (WMD etc) when preparations for Iraq actually got underway the week after inauguration day.

I've got all the info - timelines etc, but I want to make sure that the event will be big enough to attract international attention. Timing is essential when working with the media.

Any ideas how many people are expected? 1000 - 10 000 - 100 000 or more?

If this turns out like the election fraud demonstrations in december where there were less that a hundred, this could be a flop.

There would probably need to be over 20 000 to start to attract attention.

You're my eyes and ears in the States and I thank all the DUers for their work to help the truth prevail.

Please try to give me a reasonable estimation of the interest the march has generated, as I must go out on a limb and I could loose a lot of credibilty points if this doesn't live up to expectations.

13. I think it will be large...
I'm guessing 50,000+.

There are caravans and carpools from around the country heading to DC. I haven't seen this sort of buzz around a protest since the large protests before the Iraq war.

9. No problem....
I have never understood where all the litter comes form at these events. It never comes from me. I'm a smoker and I always carry a portable ash tray.

You may want to mention this to United Peace and Justice and the Answer Coalition.

11. As a member of a group that used to host public pagan gatherings
I hear ya. You would think a bunch of nature loving people would be a little more conscious.

My cig butts will be in my back pocket - so if I stink just try to be understanding...
