Should be a good one!

He is not a N.O. native, but might as well be.

3. Just on: Cover-up: toxic waters"will make New Orleans unsafe for a decade"

Cover-up: toxic waters 'will make New Orleans unsafe for a decade'

By Geoffrey Lean, Environment Correspondent
Published: 11 September 2005

Toxic chemicals in the New Orleans flood waters will make the city unsafe for full human habitation for a decade, a US government official has told The Independent on Sunday. And, he added, the Bush administration is covering up the danger.

In an exclusive interview, Hugh Kaufman, an expert on toxic waste and responses to environmental disasters at the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), said the way the polluted water was being pumped out was increasing the danger to health.

The pollution was far worse than had been admitted, he said, because his agency was failing to take enough samples and was refusing to make public the results of those it had analysed. "Inept political hacks" running the clean-up will imperil the health of low-income migrant workers by getting them to do the work.

His intervention came as President Bush's approval ratings fell below 40 per cent for the first time. Yesterday, Britain's Deputy Prime Minister, John Prescott, turned the screw by criticising the US President's opposition to the Kyoto protocol on global warming. He compared New Orleans to island nations such as the Maldives, which are threatened by rising sea levels. Other US sources spelt out the extent of the danger from one of America's most polluted industrial areas, known locally as "Cancer Alley". The 66 chemical plants, refineries and petroleum storage depots churn out 600m lb of toxic waste each year. Other dangerous substances are in site storage tanks or at the port of New Orleans. No one knows how much pollution has escaped through damaged plants and leaking pipes into the "toxic gumbo" now drowning the city. Mr Kaufman says no one is trying to find out.

7. Do they send them out automatically when they are ready?
I'd do that, except I LOVE the music he plays between segments, he had some really good music this week, as always.

12. I'm not sure unless I am missing something.
There is definitely music such as the famous "Hard Work" that was played on his show after the debates. The latest one I heard had a good jazz song about NOLA. I think I am getting everything but since I can't hear the original radio broadcast I might be missing something.

13. I think you might be missing the music from the breaks.
Here's a link to his website, where he list's the music break songs. <http://www.harryshearer.com/>

Last weeks show was a little unusual, so you might want to click the August drop down menu (after clicking on the "Le Show" link) to see the songs from the more usual shows.

He also has the full program (with the music) in RealAudio at his website. That's how I hear it if I happen to miss it over the weekend from the KCRW stream.

8. Urgent! Senate committee wants Katrina input - deadline TODAY 9/11
The Senate H.E.L.P. Committee (Health, Education, Labor and Pensions) has been requesting input on Katrina reconstruction. The deadline was changed from Friday 9/9 to Monday, 9/12 (but presume 9/11, by the end of today) to allow more input. I don't know if DUers are aware of this. It's a great opportunity to help influence the treatment of survivors and the fate of the Gulf coast.

The email for public input is listed below. These emails are going to start being reviewed by committee staff tomorrow (Mon, 9/12). I heard about this on a CNN radio rebroadcast of the Senate H.E.L.P. Committee roundtable (of disaster experts) on 9/8, but could not get this posted until now.

Email: katrina_comments@help.senate.gov
Senate H.E.L.P. website: http://help.senate.gov /
(The ranking Democrat is Sen. Edward Kennedy.)

My input to the committee is at:

9. My contribution:
I heard a lot in the week of hell in New Orleans about getting the victims left behind to food, water, and shelter.

That's backwards.

Get food, water, and shelter TO the victims.
Why were there no massive air drops from helicopters?

THEN sort out how to get them out.
This would have saved many lives, much suffering, and it ain't rocket science.

(not a rocket scientist)
