DeLay to evacuees: Isn't this fun?
Edited on Fri Sep-09-05 05:15 PM by cynatnite
While on the tour with top administration officials from Washington, including U.S. Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao and U.S. Treasury Secretary John W. Snow, DeLay stopped to chat with three young boys resting on cots.

The congressman likened their stay to being at camp and asked, "Now tell me the truth boys, is this kind of fun?"

They nodded yes, but looked perplexed.

...

"You are becoming famous all over this country and even the world," he said, adding that he's often approached by lawmakers commending Houston's response to the disaster.

1. You might want to change the title to "DeLay" with a capital "L" so
that people don't think you're asking if delays for the evacuees are fun.

2. These fucking assholes are just in a fog. Utterly clueless.
There must be a special place in hell for such as DeLay....

15. "Why, yes, Mr. DeLay. . .
Losing everything, being seperated from my family, starving for five days with no food and water is like going to a Saints game. Except for the losing everything, being seperated from my family, the starving part, the displacement and the humilating refugee status.

Please, Mr. DeLay, if I have a choice between going to Disney World or going through another Category 5 Hurricane, remind me to sign up for the Hurricane ride.

Mr. DeLay, don't you have some indictments to run from now?"

18. Reminds me of GHWB's comment Sunday
where he said this criticism of his son for NO is like criticism after a football game.

Yea, except people are dead. Completely oblivious.

3. These people have "zero" empathy.
It's like they all have an attachment disorder or autism or something.

5. I bet days without adequate food or water in sweltering heat ...
... with no way of escaping filth was a barrel of laughs. Call me an out of touch liberal, but that's not my idea of fun. I guess you need to be a soulless right winger to see the chuckles :puke:

7. Flame me if you want
but this time I do not have any problems with Delay. They were young boys and I have no problem with pretending this was a summer camp.

9. I'm with you on that
Delay may be a scumbag, but this isn't one of the times when he has been bagging scum. It's pretty close to what I'd say to kids who had just lost their home and probably their posessions -- and maybe their parents.

Of course, if anyone wants to harsh on Delay, feel free to do so. :)

12. If it was coming from their parents, I'd say it was
a clever idea...to get the kids' minds focussed on something positive.

If I was the mother of those kids, however, I wouldn't want the douchebag anywhere near them.

20. do you have kids? I do, plus an extended family.
None of them are wimps but if they'd gone through all this, young children could be expected to be frightened, angry, tired, hungry and combative. Being in a completely strange place surrounded by strangers, sleeping on cots with nothing of your own around, wondering when you might get to eat......nah. that ain't fun. it's not something you could paint as some kind of memorable adventure, either. DeLay is an insensitive fuckhead.

11. I asked my son
About how he felt after our home burned down and he was sleeping with his toothbrush because he didn't have anything else and he was wondering whether his dad would ever walk again....

nah, he didn't think it was summer camp.

21. Long time ago
We're fine, but this sure brings some of it back. Especially stupid comments. The worst made to me was a woman's 'sympathy' and how she didn't know what she'd do if that ever happened to her, but then "God wouldn't let that happen". Not to her, but he would to me??? People say goofy things when they don't understand.

23. "God wouldn't let that happen"
I don't know if I'd be able to reply to that, unless it was to ask the person to leave. Incredible.

I'm glad you all are ok now! :-)

13. I understand the spirit of your post ...
As a parent I've tried to turn situations that weren't good into an adventure ... but, these people didn't have adequate food, water and were not safe (unsafe on so many levels).

I think he might have reassured these kids differently ... promises of things getting better ...

8. What lucky duckies those victims are,
with a cot to sleep on, and FREE food and water, and they can talk to TV reporters, and they were able to travel. It's like a campout!
:sarcasm:

10. Mama Duck & Papa Duck are nowhere to be found
But wohoo for the baby ducks, and since we've finally been able to wipe out their housing, maybe we can just shuffle these baby ducks off to Tom Delay's new foster program and raise 'em up right.

Have I said how much I hate these people today.

19. The thing is, DeLay's comment dismisses the kids' feelings...
Whatever they might be. In his mind, maybe kids aren't entitled to their own feelings. He just **assumes** that they might think that their experience might be perceived as "fun."

If he were a human being, he'd start with "How're you fellas holding up? You feeling scared? Tell me about it...etc."

But it's DeLay, and he's pretty bleeping far from a human being. :grr:

22. It's self-congratulatory
Besides what you said, it's also an attempt to dismiss the severity of what is happening by putting more emphasis on what is being done to help than on the trauma of those affected. If he can rationalize it all away as "summer camp", then he doesn't have to think about the poor or disabled or otherwise disrupted lives of people next week either.

25. A small window into the mind of a sociopath.
On the scale of Republican outrages, this is pretty low...but it reflects the attitude of these people perfectly. They screw things up and want to spin their shit into candy.
