About 200 Katrina survivors in front of the White House NOW!
Edited on Thu Sep-08-05 02:40 PM by im10ashus

"There is a gathering here of hurricane victims testifying to the TV cameras about their difficulty in getting out of New Orleans.

Probably about 200 people.

There's a lot of mainstream press here and a lot of people with signs that say shame...

Now they are walking across the street and standing directly in front of the White House and screaming, "Shame on Bush"."

4. That's going to be the story
Move on or some other liberal group bussed them in - they will focus on how these aren't really hurricane victims but professional protesters - see the recent talking points about Cindy Sheehan for details.

130. I'd never thought about this before, but wasn't this Miami-Dade country?

Shouldn't the racial make-up of the "citizens" have aroused some immediate suspicion? (i.e. zero African-Americans, and no/few Latinos)

28. FEMA's delayed busing contracts from Superdome/Convn'tCenter
Edited on Thu Sep-08-05 02:30 PM by EVDebs
Most of the FEMA busing was done by contracts let AFTER the hurricane hit. New Newsweek, pages 44-45 (Sept 12, 2005 Special Report 'The Lost City') shows a photo of the school buses along one side of the road and the FEMA-contracted charter buses loading up on the other side of the road. Excursions Unlimited, Inc is from Birmingham AL and B&C Charter is from Alcoa TN. In other sites available on the web I've found that FEMA chartered 5000 buses, up from the 650 buses mentioned on FEMA's own website (Sept. 2nd, FEMA Urges Patience article).

I found that buses from Cincinnatti OH and Hickory NC were chartered. All busing charters by FEMA, which were days too late should be a central point in any investigation of hurricane evacuation planning. IEM, Inc had the Bush June 2004 contract for this through FEMA. www.ieminc.com

Good question 'how'd they get there'. As with the original Montgomery bus boycott and with Freedom Riders, and now this, the poor and people of color once again have BUSING as a central issue in Dr. King's last battle...that of economic justice in America.

Investigate this DUers, please please please. As my old Masonic daddy would be saying 'Oh Lord my God, is there no help for the poor son of the widow of Napthali ?' This should get the ball rolling.

At the time he was a national hero (who later wrote the book "War is a Racket"). Set against him, though, was the rabidly anti-communist Douglas Mac Arthur (who later would counsel using nuclear weapons in the Korean War).

Today, who does the left have akin to a Major-General Butler?

Edited on Fri Sep-09-05 01:00 PM by EVDebs
see CBS New's 'They've Screwed Up' article
www.cbsnews.com/stories/2004/05/21/60minutes/main618896.shtml

but I don't know if he's a progressive or not; he surely got slapped down. Another would be Lt Col Steven Butler of the Monterey Defense Language School, who also got smacked down for speaking out on the training of the 9-11 hijackers by the US. He might be hard to find but probably well worth the effort.

Maybe DIA analyst Patrick Lang could be helpful too. He knows the Calabi stuff was 'good work' and exploited our neocon infected intell agencies.

Do you allow yourself to be bussed to a near prison camp?

Or do you say FUCK BUSH and head to D.C. to camp out on the Whitehouse Lawn and ask WHY?!?!?!

Bush brought his own downfall on himself.

You've got the makings of the 1932 Bonus Army March right now and you don't even know it.

New Orleanians should be asking for equivalence to the 9-11 relief efforts...

Bush may end up having a police riot, as with MacArthur's (and Patton and Eisenhower) military who used excessive force in rousting the '32 veteran's encampment, and disobeyed Hoover's orders from what I've read.

That was America's original Tienanmen Square incident, but it guaranteed that Roosevelt was elected later. Remember that.

93. Regarding the upcoming Day of Prayer, DUers should remind Bushco
that "Faith without works is dead" James 2:14-26

""What good is it, my brothers, is a man claims to have faith but has no deeds ? Can such faith save him ? Suppose a brother or sister is without clothes and daily food. If one of you says to him, 'Go, I wish you well; keep warm and well fed,' but does nothing about his physical needs, what good is it ? In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead. But someone will say, 'You have faith; I have deeds.' Show me your faith without deeds, and I will show you my faith by what I do. You believe that there is one God. Good ! Even the demons believe that - and shudder. You foolish man. do you want evidence that faith without deeds is useless. Was not our ancestor Abraham considered righteous for what he did when he offered his son Isaac on the altar ? You see that his faith and his actions were working together, and his faith was made complete by what he did. And the scripture was fulfilled that says, 'Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness,' and he was called God's friend. You see that a person is justified by what he does and not by faith alone. In the same way, was not even Rahab the prostitute considered righteous for what she did when she gave lodging to the spies and sent them off in a different direction ? As the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without deeds is dead.""

Your delays in aiding those in the Superdome and Convention Center speak volumes, Mr. Bush.

People who were holed up in motels, living on credit cards and what they had in their bank accounts..

Now they find that they "may never go back", their jobs are gone, their homes, all their possessions..and if they are LUCKY, they may get a pittance and a LOAN from (in)FEMA...but WHEN??

How long could YOU live near your own community...in a motel, eating out every day...paying to do laundry...??

These people survived with no physical injury, but they are ruined as well, and they are just starting to realize it.. They will be PISSED..and may still have enough money left to show the tyrant what they think of him:)

107. It wasn't 200 Katrina survivors..
It was approximately 200 people listening to approximately 12 Katrina survivors...

from the kos diary

Update <2005-9-8 15:46:2 by dwahzon>: There are pictures and brief report from Victoria Ellen and KarenDC who were onsite at the Moveon.org press conference with NOLA survivors in front of White House at this link...

http://www.democracycellproject.net/blog/archives/2005/09/_the_crowd_gath.html

Update 2 <2005-9-8 15:46:2 by dwahzon>: KarenDC said that there were 12 survivors that spoke. They all were very clear that they wanted to tell their stories and make sure they were heard. One speaker was a teacher who said that she didn't know if any of her students were alive or dead and was very concerned about them. KarenDC said each of the speakers was surrounded by reporters as soon as each finished speaking. She does not know if any of them are from the group of survivors who are staying at the DC armory.

I felt that some of the Katrina survivors might go to DC & protest. I know that if I were one of them, I would. I wonder if some of them will be at the Sept. 24 protest, too? Wouldn't be a surprise. After all, Bush spent money that should have been spent on disaster relief preparedness in Iraq.

this is great news. It means even if the media falls back on its old habits - which it is doing right now in many places - the voices of NOLA will not be silenced. I felt last Friday that we would see an uprising (political, not necessarily violent) as a result of this. When it hadn't materialized by Tuesday, I started giving up hope. I didn't realize that it would have to come from, and would come from, the PEOPLE themselves and not an awakened media.
