There is a way to get some idea of the death toll.
Those who are identified by papers on their persons and those identified by tatoos, etc. will be listed on the social security death index. That can be googled in a few months and figured out by the death date. Just google security death index.
There will be a lot of men because they usually have a wallet in their pocket, but the women carry their papers in their purses and therefore won't have anything to identify them with except the address where they are found unless they were found in the streets. Most children will be in the house and also will be identified by their address.
It won't be a complete count, but we can get some idea from the death index. Almost all will have a social security number.

1. You DO realize how slowly the SSDI lists people, don't you?
I think you'll be looking for quite a while...

4. I've found quite a lot from a year or so ago. I have a
genealogy website and fill in tombstone dates with the ssdi.

2. Check with the morticians' association.

Someone had posted a link here to a memo that went out to morticians; it was estimated up to 40,000 deaths. Perhaps the organization will keep track of the actual body count, or individual morticians involved might talk.
