Now was this necessary?
Victims looking for a home could change face of city

HURRICANE KATRINA

Steve Campbell/Chronicle
Mayor Bill White holds a press conference at the George R Brown Convention Center following a "Mayor's Community Meeting" which brought together city, county, state, and Federal officials.

Hurricane Katrina changed the lives of New Orleans residents forever. What is beginning to dawn on Houston officials is that this city also will change in ways that no one can predict.

From doctors and architects to retirees and gang members, more than 150,000 Louisiana residents have landed on this city's doorstep. Some will be here for days and months, but many will simply stay.

They will be looking for jobs and apartments. They will put their children in schools. They will figure out how to navigate the city in a bus.

5. PT in Houston
consists of:

(1) Park 'n' Ride from mostly white suburbs to Downtown during the business week. Nice buses, frequent schedules.

(2) As an example, take a ride on the #44 through Acres Homes. If it arrives. And if it doesn't break down once you get on board. This is it for the poor and car-less in Houston. Be sure to add 2 hours to your commute each way.

Oh yeah, and I forgot the stupid light rail for moneyed relatives of people at the Med Center. Direct connection from fabulous new downtown hotels to the Med Center. Maybe a few actual workers take this one, but they probably had to take ride # (2) to get to the light rail.

9. That rail
I believe was to make Reliant Center more accessible. You know, serve the public by getting them to the games on time. Important stuff.

i lived in Houston for 3 years and they have the same issues all big cities do and they had them B4 the hurricane so they need to stop with that.

11. We didn't born him and we don't want him. He is an East Coast
Conservative elitist. I think Connecticut should take him back.

12. I disagree. We've 'borne' him far too long, already.

When Junior was first running for the WH, I told everyone I knew outside of Texas, "Don't listen to his PR! It's not the way he describes it! "No Child Left Behind" is a DISASTER!" When he was selected by the SCOTUS to be pResident, I consoled myself by saying, "At least he's out of Texas." Gee, THAT turned out well, didn't it?

14. I think this kind of thing will get ugly...
in the coming months as there's a backlash against people who need so much help after losing the lives they built in New Orleans and other Gulf Coast areas. That kind of twisted logic will spill into the way some people openly discuss their plight and news stories that sensationalize that.

Interestingly, our mayor was interviewed by the local public broadcasting radio station, and he believes the influx of evacuees here (estimated to be between 650 and perhaps 3,000 in the metro area) could in some ways be a good thing for the city, bringing new people who have a different perspective, different skills and abilities, and that's something that could enrich the city. I thought that was a nice attitude.

But mentioning "gang members" in the same breath as evacuees is just disgusting, unnecessary and a sign of obvious bias.
