This may be jumping the gun somewhat but
After the city of NO is pumped out and the discussion turns to rebuilding, it is inevitable that one plan would be to bulldoze the flooded areas and raise the elevation.

This was done in Galveston after the 1900 Hurricane. Although this probably makes sense from an engineering stand point, I am wondering what the reaction would be from the point of view of environmental, historical, political considerations.

1. I don't know. I wondered about that too. As they talk about what to
do with all the trash, and trash from destroyed buildings and homes, I wondered if they couldn't just bury it under enough dirt that it would just disapate in time. I guess environmental engineers are going to have to answer that.

2. Hubs doesn't think that's a good solution--it will compress &
not compact propery, plus blah blah can't remember.

Call in the Netherlands. The WHOLE country was built up for gosh sakes. (Of course, they spend money on infrastucture & maint., and have excellent evac plans for the occasional river floods.)

The last big flood in Holland--200K people evac'd PLUS thousands of dairy cows who got milked twice per day--48 hour evac. 30 people died. 1995.

3. Ah, the Netherlands
If there's a god-type thing in the sky, someday I will be a citizen of that fine country.

4. Didn't I hear they offered help to the US and we said NO THANKS?
I know I read some post here that listed a lot of help from countries who had lots of experience with this kind of tragedy. Germany I think offered some satelite phone system, I know one of the countries that had experience with dams and dikes offered. All of them sounded like they could be a big help, but NOOOOO, we're again going to do it ALONE!

YAAAHHHHEEEEWWWW What's wrong with these people?????????
