Assessing Katrina,The Note betrays usual anti-Dem corporate media bias
Edited on Thu Sep-08-05 07:16 AM by Skinner
While trying to fake the usual corporate media "nonpartisan bias." But look at the difference in the way the two lists below are produced. One is presented as politically astute, and the other as politically ludicrous. I think you'll figure out very quickly where The Note's real bias lies.

The Note: Red Versus Blue, Part XXXII
The Absence of the Color Purple
By MARK HALPERIN, DAVID CHALIAN, TEDDY DAVIS, SARAH BAKER and KELLEY PREMO

Sep. 7, 2005 - WASHINGTON, Sep. 7

NEWS SUMMARY
What the White House thinks it knows about the politics of Katrina:

1. "Federalizing" the response to a natural disaster in advance or immediately after the fact is not politically or legally feasible, especially when state and local officials of the other party resist such an effort.

2. Most of the TV-picture-generating problems of the last week were caused by the rank incompetence of the New Orleans and Louisiana governments, whose mayor and governor both publicly and privately behaved abominably, regarding evacuation, health care, law enforcement, civil order, etc.

3. The national media and the people of New Orleans do not care one iota about (1) and (2), and, for now, the White House has to largely accept that.

4. Decrying the "blame game" and focusing practically and rhetorically on helping people now -- whether poll tested or not -- is the lynchpin of the best-available strategy.

1. Incidentally, the Note clearly misrepresents the Democratic side

of its battling lists. I just wanted to make that point explicit, though it should be obvious on a cursory reading that the List sets up the Dems as strawmen and strawwomen.

4. I didn't want to leave the impression that I thought the Note's
representation of the Democratic "understanding" of the politics of Katrina is fair or accurate. The Note seems to think Dems are only looking for a way back into power and will use any opportunity to get it. I have seen nothing but real outrage coming from a variety of Democrats--most notably from members of the CBC and members of the Lousiana delegation. The Note wants to paint all Dem response as being as opportunistic as I (and probably most Democratics) see all Republican response. I see despair among Democrats over being powerless to change the direction of the nation and outrage over the actual direction. The Note sees glee over a political opportunity and a stereotypically inept Democratic response. The Note, in other words, is on the same page it was before Katrina, in awe of Rovian political mastery and utterly contemptuous of all Democratic politics.

5. hey thanks!
I understand what you mean now.

Interesting that you used the word glee, because i did feel the "democrats" part sounded awfully fluffy and frivolous.

I'm more interested in the republican part tho.

not very easily disguised are the strategy, the fear and the hopes all rolled into one.

6. The Republican part is definitely key
and I think the Note is better at representing IT than at representing the Dem part. (Probably becuase they're Republicans, I'm guessing.)

It will be very important to stay on the lookout for any sign that the Republicans have figured out a way to squirm out from under the mess they've piled on top of themselves. They need to be kicked brutally to keep them from figuring that out. Unfortunately, it is an opportunity, and it shouldn't be missed. But not just for the idiotic Republican reason that power in itself is good, but because Republicans in power have repeatedly demonstrated that they're NO GOOD! Or as Pelosi said, in denial and dangerous.
