WTF?! I thought Star Trek was for Liberals
Do these people know anything about who Gene Roddenberry was?
Roddenberry himself was a flaming liberal, anti-religion, anti-corporatism, anti-racism humanist. He's been quoted as saying that Star Trek was his vision of the 'ultimate liberal utopia.' Why do rightwingers frequent Star Trek boards? The entire philosophy of Star Trek goes against everything they believe in!
I don't get it.

1. These winger nuts attempt to take over any board that may
have liberals. Some boards just let them, others fight it.

2. I think people see
what they want to see. Lots of liberals or left wingers don't want anything to do with space, on the grounds of achieving Nirvana here first, or not wanting to 'pollute' space with any human presence.

9. "Lots of liberals or left wingers don't want anything to do with space,"
Now THERE'S a quaint attitude! I say, the sooner we get off this rock the better. Humanity offers too much as a species to die out. And unless we have multiple planetary colonies, it's only a matter of time until something does us in.

You know. The one where citizens have a war and if the computer decides they're a casualty, they must report to the disintegration chamber to have their death consummated.

He doesn't see any parallel or stupidity to the escalation of the war between Christian and Islamic fundies?

4. I think right-wingers like Star Trek ...
... because when it comes right down to it, I think the neocons take their marching orders directly from the Klingon High Command. :tinfoilhat:

No way, Klingons have honor (most of them).
They are more likely Romulans or Cardassians. Hmm, I think the latter best fits Republicans.

10. Trekkies and pedophilia - maybe that's the right-wing connection
The Star Trek connection

A surprising number of child sex abusers appear to be Trekkies. Trying to figure out what that means, however, shows how little we really know about pedophiles

JONATHON GATEHOUSE

The first thing detectives from the Toronto police sex crimes unit saw when they entered Roderick Cowan's apartment was an autographed picture of William Shatner. Along with the photos on the computer of Scott Faichnie, also busted for possessing child porn, they found a snapshot of the pediatric nurse and Boy Scout leader wearing a dress "Federation" uniform. Another suspect had a TV remote control shaped like a phaser. Yet another had a Star Trek credit card in his wallet. One was using "Picard" as his screen name. In the 3 1/2 years since police in Canada's biggest city established a special unit to tackle child pornography, investigators have been through so many dwellings packed with sci-fi books, DVDs, toys and collectibles like Klingon swords and sashes that it's become a dark squadroom joke. "We always say there are two types of pedophiles: Star Trek and Star Wars," says Det. Ian Lamond, the unit's second-in-command. "But it's mostly Star Trek."

I've seen that article.
There's a lot more research that needs to be done there I'd say.

11. Well J. Michael Straczynski , who created Babylon V is also liberal
Edited on Mon Sep-05-05 04:51 PM by calipendence
as hell too. Has a lot of usenet postings to back that up.

However, Jerry Doyle, who played Garribaldi on the show is a well known right wing talk show host now.

Also, there's a story that apparently Straczynski needed to take a while to recover from hearing about that Karl Rove and other Bushies were avid fans of Babylon V and it was one of their favorite shows. You'd think they would note that it depicts a very close resemblance of what we have now as the big flawed Earth government on that show. Perhaps President Clark gave them ideas on how to "do bidniss!"...

Check this Usenet post...

13. Wingnuts took over a forum I used to go to
It was a forum about MICROCHIPS and ELECTRONICS. The disruptors would bring up politics at every chance, baiting people then insulting them if they found out you didn't have the "right" view of politics.

It got so bad a bunch of us started a new invitation-only forum.

18. We Have a Couple of RW-nuts in our ST Club
Our Star Trek club, the USS Chesapeake (http://www.usschesapeake.org/) has a couple of right wingnuts in it. Fortunately, they tend to get shouted down by the rest of us, who are flaming liberals.

I've met some RWers in Trek fandom. However, most of the RWers tend to be Babylon 5 and (more recently) BSG fans. I hate to say it, but we even have some RWers in Farscape fandom. :(

Ironically, if the people of Ohio had known then what they know now, Captain Janeway would be the First Lady of Ohio. Kate Mulgrew is married to the guy who ran against Gov. Shaft. Of course, the repugs tried to smear all of her husband's supporters as a bunch of Trek geeks. I didn't get to ask her at the big convention that I went to last month if her husband felt that he was vindicated. I got the feeling that she and her husband want to put that all behind them and focus on the future.

Jerry Doyle is a radio talk-show host? I hope they have a seven-second delay on him! We have a running joke about how quickly Doyle will drop the F-Bomb after he comes on stage. I think the shortest time was about 30 seconds.
