I gotta tell this story--Fundie neighbor
My neighbor was bragging yesterday that while on vacation at the beach last month, she complained that the space she rented for a week was not up to snuff (dirty blankets or some shit). She got a refund for her stay in the mail yesterday. The fundie and her husband were trying to decide whether to stick in the bank for a rainy day or go blow it on some frivolity. She said she was worried that God was going to strike her or a member of her family down (no, I'm not fucking kidding!) because she has more money now than she ever had. Yeah, it took everything I had not to roll my eyes or smack her in the back of the head. I just calmly mentioned that she might donate it to the Red Cross or other relief organization. She got this stricken look on her face and said that she surely couldn't do that. Her husband would be angry. Yes, they are both black (So am I--well, I'm a halfrican if that counts as anything, which is why I'm so horrified that they aren't interested in helping brothers and sisters). Yes, they are both upset at the way black folk are being treated in N.O. But not enough to give away MONEY to help. But she'd go to church and pray for them.

1. hopefully your suggestion planted a seed
and perhaps with some thought they might do as you suggest - if nothing else out of guilt. One can always hope.

21. Ah part of the "Christian in Name Only" crowd
didn't even tweak their conscience for long, did it? Sad when those who proclaim a "belief system" so loudly (your opening statement describing these as "Fundy Neighbors suggests this is the case) - so blatantly don't have a clue as to the teachings of Christ.

3. Man oh man
it is interesting how these people view things sometimes. I thought Jesus's teachings were to help those who were in need! One can make a big show of praying, but that's what hypcrites do.

12. You're right, it doesn't
They've been brainwashed by the local fundie churches. It's scary the way some people think. I try to explain sometimes to people that there are conservative Dems that are racists, and black folk who are rabid Fundies. It's tough to wrap the brain around.

31. I would memorize a few key Gospel verses for next time she tries that
Matthew 25:41-45:

41. "Then He will also say to those on His left, `Depart from Me, accursed ones, into the eternal fire which has been prepared for the devil and his angels;
42. for I was hungry, and you gave Me nothing to eat; I was thirsty, and you gave Me nothing to drink;
43. I was a stranger, and you did not invite Me in; naked, and you did not clothe Me; sick, and in prison, and you did not visit Me.'
44. "Then they themselves also will answer, `Lord, when did we see You hungry, or thirsty, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not take care of You?'
45. "Then He will answer them, `Truly I say to you, to the extent that you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to Me.'

or

Mark 7:6

6. And He said to them, "Rightly did Isaiah prophesy of you hypocrites, as it is written: `THIS PEOPLE HONORS ME WITH THEIR LIPS, BUT THEIR HEART IS FAR AWAY FROM ME.

or Mark 8:36

36. "For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world, and forfeit his soul?

or, Mark 10:21-25

21. Looking at him, Jesus felt a love for him and said to him, "One thing you lack: go and sell all you possess and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me."
22. But at these words he was saddened, and he went away grieving, for he was one who owned much property.
23. And Jesus, looking around, *said to His disciples, "How hard it will be for those who are wealthy to enter the kingdom of God!"
24. The disciples were amazed at His words. But Jesus *answered again and *said to them, "Children, how hard it is to enter the kingdom of God!
25. "It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God."

or

Matthew 6:24

24. "No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and wealth.

or Matthew 7:21

21. "Not everyone who says to Me, `Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father who is in heaven will enter.

there's more, too...

7. Wow. Bastards.
...but I believe it. Fundi's are only religious for selfish reasons. For their sake I hope THEIR Bible is right, and that there IS a hell, because I have little doubt that every last Fundi in America will be burning for all eternity.

14. It's a beautiful thing!
the fundys sweat up the very last second that they haven't dotted all the "i"s and will end up in the BAD PLACE.

Those of us who believe in "nothing" only have to be comfortable in our own skin to go out clean.

13. Did she say she "was blessed" ?
Fundie acquaintance of mine drove his car into a ditch because some little old lady cut him off. The insurance company bought it and he got a check in the mail for #1000s more than the repair cost him. Said it was a "blessing."

Your story surprises me because I've always thought black fundies were much different than white fundies. I guess they have some things in common.

17. Tell ya true, I don't know many black folks who act like this
Most are churchgoing AMEs who really believe in helping fellow man. There's a few who have been taken in by, God I hate to say this but it's true, local Fundie Methodist churches. They're crazier than bedbugs.

18. money is not a "blessing"; blessings happen in your brain
a blessing is being able to understand and know science well enough to apply your knowledge to developing a vaccine for a crippling disease.

A blessing is intrinsically knowing how to make someone else grok something.

A blessing is being able to take a "moral value" from a bumper sticker to a saved life.

I wish religious people would stop taking about morals.

20. You should print this out and hand it to her
Matthew 25:35-40

35 for I hungered, and ye gave me to eat; I thirsted, and ye gave me to drink; I was a stranger, and ye took me in;

36 naked, and ye clothed me; I was ill, and ye visited me; I was in prison, and ye came to me.

37 Then shall the righteous answer him saying, Lord, when saw we thee hungering, and nourished thee; or thirsting, and gave thee to drink?

38 and when saw we thee a stranger, and took thee in; or naked, and clothed thee?

39 and when saw we thee ill, or in prison, and came to thee?

40 And the King answering shall say to them, Verily, I say to you, Inasmuch as ye have done it to one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it to me.

22. Oy!
I'm hoping this will open my African American officemate's eyes about just how horrible * is. She's moderate, but she hates the thought of gays getting married. Sheeze.

She just got back from NOLA and was horrified by the devastation. I haven't seen her since Wed afternoon, so I don't know what she's been seeing since then.

I'm hoping this will make her realize that if she's going to support the hatred of one group (gays), she might be supporting people who don't give a (&)(_( about Black people, either.

23. "Religion" normally fits
all too well around those who wrap themselves in it, like a cloak -- and those who use it to cloak themselves in "principle" and "holiness", while doing whatever it is that they wish.

And hypocrisy is always with us.

However, when unethical behavior, shielding behind the name of religion, becomes organized, systematized and backed-up by the powerful, then it becomes a threat that any number of individual hypocrites could never equal. (And someday, this cult-of-cults might just break away from control by the powerful.)
