The 2008 Den Presidential Candidate needs to say

"When I'm President, I won't finish reading a children's book or finish my vacation, when first told of a national disaster, I'll act at once."

No matter who it is, they MUST say it and pound it home.

1. You are right. That person needs to repeat it over and over at every
opportunity. The average Joe American cannot forget how Bush reacted to two of the worst disasters this country has ever seen.

4. Won't work
It'll sound hollow. Besides even that be an unspoken repudation of Bush and be taking a chance on turning off some of that needed "base" vote.

7. What they need to say
is much bigger than that. That's just a slam at an outgoing president, and will be meaningless, because they won't be running against Bush.

They need to say that we now see a clear difference between the two party's philosophies. We see what domestic spending cuts, unnecessary war and constant tax cuts have done to our ability to protect ourselves.

They need to show people exactly WHAT the result of Republican policy is.

8. And while he or she is at it...
* Better government regulation of all our energy infrastructure. Remind people of California electricity crisis of 2001 and the gasoline price gouging and shortages of 2005.

* Real investment in alternative energy sources to reduce dependence on oil. Not hydrogen-powered cars, but things that can be built now. Wind power, solar power, biodiesel. Hybrid engines need to become the norm. We need extra capacity in the system so that the inevitable breakdowns don't disrupt things. We need real emphasis on conservation, mass transit, carpooling, energy efficient everything. Solid goals, such as "reduce foreign oil consumption by 20% in 3 years." This is the country that put a man on the moon in less than ten. We can do this.

* For every disaster we CAN prepare for, that a plan is laid out for immediate mass evacuations of the area in question. Require lifeboats and emergency kits to be stored in every building in NO, if it ends up being rebuilt. This is cheap insurance.

* Appoint a REAL FEMA director, not the former head of the Arabian Horse Association, especially when he fucked that up too.

* No more wars for oil. No more lying to the American people about the reasons for war.

* No more starving the states of vital necessities to pay for tax cuts for the richest 1% of the population. Tax increases for the top 10%... tax cuts for everyone else.

* Do SOMETHING about the airlines. No other transportation in this country can function on a purely for-profit basis. Highways? Trains? Mass transit? All funded mostly by socialist programs. The airlines are effectively funded the same way, since they have to be bailed out by the government every 10 years anyway. Remind people that some degree of socialism is good for everyone.

* No taking FIVE WEEKS of vacation when the rest of the country barely gets any.

* No more letting the fundamentalists define what Christianity is, religion is, and patriotism is. Reach out to mainstream religions.

I could go on for pages but you've probably stopped reading already.
