You think there is outrage now? Wait till they do the body count.
The Mayor of NO is estimating that thousands may be dead. In Mississippi, the Governor has estimated that it will be over a thousand too. Will the bodies be dealt with as delicately as the fallen of 911? Will there be funerals in historic and predominant churches every day of the week with processions and bagpipers broadcast on national TV? Will there be eulogies broadcast on TV from the nations most well known white Ministers? WEill there be a day of national mourning and prayer?

These things remain to be seen, but if the way the government has handled this situation thus far is any indication how it holds the value of the lives of these particular Americans, I wouldn't bet on it.

1. I am very concerned that the true numbers will be "buried". I hope the
press does not back down from this important part of this tragedy. This story must be told, all of it, including the number of people who died.

3. I want there to be a LIST of all the victims printed in the papers...
just like there was after 9-11.

4. Outrage? Fatigue Is Already Setting In
Soon the corporate media will find the "next big thing". Maybe it'll be John Roberts or another runaway bride or other corporate whoring. New Orleans and Katrina will be old news and time to move along. It'll be assumed thousands died and even when the bodies begin to show up, the media will be on to something else. For many it's because this story is just too depressing...better to ignore it than face what really happened.

Already the bucks have been passed. I see Blanco being set up as the scapegoat here and, as noted in another thread here, if there's gonna be blame, it'll be placed on meester boosh's lackeys...they'll find toadies to fire or "investigate" and any further questions will be called "partisan attacks". The emperor did no wrong.

While I see a lot of outrage here on DU, I'm sure not seeing that with the people I'm dealing with. Most are almost resigned to how this regime does things...there's little they can do but watch in horror.

There's a very uneasy feeling in this country right now...sadly, the natural instinct of our corporate media is to create a diversion.

7. They'll declare it a national security issue
And keep a lid on the figures.

Slap gag orders on anybody that might talk about them, as well.

(Do we have a "gag order" smiley here? We're going to need one.)

8. No one, even the gov't, will ever know the real numbers - only guesses.
Bodies that sink and are eaten by marine life will never be counted. Many people have no family to know they missing so they won't be counted. Some entire families have been wiped out - uncounted. There will only be estimates of the number.

9. there will never be an accurate body count
and do you count all the people who will die from disease in the coming months, thanks to the ongoing pathetically incompetent federal response? Why the fuck do we even *have* something like FEMA if this is the best we can do in the face of a real emergency? Shit.

10. I do NOT think the bodies will be handled respectfully and I do NOT think
there will be 'national' funerals as there were after 9/11. The attacks of 9/11 were able to be spun as making heros of the victims. New Orleans more resembles Darfur than America to the bushbots. They won't do it in any way the same as they did in New York.

After all ..... these are people of color ..... looters, shooters, and rapists ....... haven't you been following the news? These are people who are unable to trace their family roots beyond a few generations. These are people who abandon their families. Think of the worst sterotype of black people. THAT is how the vicitms in NOLA will be seen.

More than any event in our recent history, these events show CLEARLY that racism is alive and well in the US.

Go ahead .... make the comparison ...... NOLA-Florida ..... go ahead, America ..... make THAT fucking comparison.

Were there armed soldiers decked out in cammo with guns slung over their shoujlders as part of the 'help' for Florida? Were there thousands of victims held like prisoners? Were relief workers prevented from entering the affected area for 'security' reasons?

Fuck this .....

I am in emotional agony over this.

11. I think this is the reason that the military has been sent in
Figure it... no humanitarian relief organisations allowed... the military has taken over... The military is classically NOT A CIVILIAN ORGANSIATION with civilian freedoms to speak out. They are a world apart. Nothing will get out that they want hidden, and grave (no pun intended) consequences for those that do not march lockstep.

Just the pictures this morning of General Honore having to tell the troops to drop their guns...? says it all. They are going into NO as if going to battle.. locked and loaded.

No, I don't think we will ever know the body count.

Also, the fact that they are now "diluting" the persons being shipped out tells me that once the military takes over, this will be put on a back burner.

Now, back to new footage of Michael Jackson.

12. On Monday someone said this will exceed the death toll from 9/11
That did and still does seem perfectly legitimate.

How many have died under GWB? The number will be staggering.
